astatic mics

Ok, could do with some advice regards astatic mics? ill try not to post to many questions and I have read as much as I can find before posting.

Apart from VHF, UHF and 27meg marine radios I haven't been around the AM seen for a very long time.

Finding the AM a buzz again and enjoying playing around with SSB but whats the advantage of astatic mics and when using this particular mic do you have turn your mic gain down on your radio? or just turn the astatic mic down?

Just from what I have read from other posts, you won't get the squeal witH a NOISE CANCELLING MIC as you normally get when you turn your mic gain too high. I do notice this with my D-104 since it is so sensitive to background noises. JMHO, and 3's to you/yours downunder,and a good day to you.

Astatic is just as good as any other brand of mic, some people prefer them, others prefer Turner and then others prefer countless others. Since your thread was Astatic specific I would have to ask if your refering to an Astatic AMPLIFIED power mic or the noise canceling versions ? I personally use a variety of their mics, some amplified, some non amplified depending on what radio I am operating, I like the d104 models, I had a hand held road devil and gave it away, I didnt care for its build quality or its sound.

Its been said before and it holds true that a mic needs to be matched to your voice/radio and operating environment , also what sounds good to you may not always sound good to someone else.

If you choose an amplified mic like the d104, I would recommend adjusting the radios mic gain at full and then slowly adjusting the d104, you wont need much on most radios from the d104, they are plenty sensitive. This way you can then meter the amount of audio off the face of your radio.

You may also wish to look into Turners line,such as the +3 if a desk mic is what your after.

P.S. i would also advise if you dont already have one to invest in a wattmeter that has an "audio out" headphone jack, this is a great tool to monitor your out going audio and helps you make adjustments to any microphone so you can hear what you sound like rather than relying on someone elses tastes and ears.

Certain older radios require a non amplified D104 like the Browning Golden Eagles. Newer radios amplified D104's was good.

Yes, I am using a non amplified D104 on my TRAM D201 quite nicely.

My search is for a pushrod to connect my chicken choker properly.
