Siltronix 1011D Comanche transceiver help

#388593

Post by BigLion »

Got one of these at a ham fest. Issue seems to be very weak modulation but plenty of carrier/signal. I tried two different mics but not a power mic as I don’t think these rigs can take a power mic. Tubes all check out fine. I am on Long Island NY and looking for a technician to repair and tune this rig up.help!

Siltronix was an excellent radio back in the day, nice receive and good transmit, but a little drifty on frequency. They used a "Hi Z" microphone so not all mics will sound good on them. The radio shines on SSB but AM it does lack so a power mic will help, recommend a older 4 wire TUG stand D104.

I ran a 1011C for a few years. Great sideband radio. AM function left a lot to be desired .

I run a complete Swan station and Siltronix is the same. I use TUG D-104 on all my gear. Like Mdyoungblood suggested, get aTUG D-104 and the high impedance microphone element will make it shine.

I have a Siltronix 1011c i use constantly and the best mic i found was a silver eagle D104 powered one. Turn mic up about half way and then turn control on radio to about 11 oclock position. I also have a shure non powered on that sounds good also but D104 everyone said is louder and not bass sounding.

I love the old Siltronix and Swan radios. I just had a 1011B brought back to life by a repairman in Gainesville, Ga. It's only doing about 25 /30 watts presently so I may need to replace final OR, there is a carrier alignment/adjustment described . I think I got a CD off Ebay that has all the Siltronix manuals and at the end of the B owners manual is this write up about to properly adjust the carrier to the center of the correct filter.. The AM frequency is only about 3k bandwidth but the total filter is 6k ( 3k for usb and 3k for lower. The AM works off ONE sideband. so if someone has ever "adjusted" it , it can be off. I think that is more like My problem. If you can't find the CD or info online I will be glad to get it to you, somehow... I am thinking that is all that is bad with mine because otherwise it talks fine and does almost full power on SB. Someone who is more familiar with the circuits of the Siltronix will most likely be able to explain better and do the adjustment in a few minutes..It is actually aligning the 3k bandwidth AM carrier within the proper usb or lsb filter side.

I have 4 1011D's I'm working on to bring back to life. In doing so I am using the Siltronix manual and gotten helpful information out of some of the Swan manuals. I found a carrier oscillator alignment procedure written up by Skipp May that works on Swan and Siltronix, got me on the right path working on my units. I have always used straight D104's on 1011's and had good reviews.
My big problem is finding replacement slide switches, seems like each switch has it's own secret hand shake to make the contacts make.

Wow, finding original switches is going to be rather hard, luckily there is only 4, 2 are slide switches and 2 are monetary. Dead 1011C models show up on eBay all the time.
Wiring them was done by hand back then so my suggestion there would be to snap a pic before removing the switch. Unless they are broken off they probably can be cleaned up with some DeoxIT D5.

I’ll be working on my “C” model, it needs filter caps so I’ll go through the whole radio? Bought a new 8950 tube years ago to change out so that is an expensive averted.
