Power supply options for President Mckinley

#408355

Post by cupton »

Hi all. Hoping you might be able to answer a question for this CB radio noob. I have a President McKinley USA 12/24v that I’m looking to power up as a home base station along with mobile. Looking for a power supply to allow for this and since I’m new to all of this I thought I’d get your feedback or suggestions.

Would the following two options allow me to power up at home as well as mobile? Still reading through all the info here but thought I’d reach out.

Thank you in advance for any help!

Sorry, late to the party. Don't use one of those computer type power supplies. For home get a regulated 115 to 12 Volt power supply rated at lease 15 - 20 amps. That's overkill but if you get a linear or more powerful radio you won't have to upgrade. MFJ makes power supplies in that amperage range and they are not too expensive.

In your car, wire direct to the battery and use 30 amp Anderson power poles for quick disconnect. Those 12 volt cigarette lighter type of plugs can't handle a sustained pull when transmitting.

cigarette lighter plug for the car is fine for most CB Radio installs for power...10 meter radios that are rated at over 40w however will need direct wiring to battery...

Biggest problem with the cigarette lighter power plugs is they often pick-up unwanted noise from the cars electrical system like alternator whine, wiper motor noise, and spark plug popping sounds in the radios receive when turned on.

As for the DC/AC converter you posted the link to, I've never used one like that, or even seen one like that so can't say one way or another if it would work...On a side note...Nothing wrong with using computer power supply's to power your equipment...Most of the custom Amp builders use them everyday inside their plug-n-play AC Base Amps..and depending on how big the amp is, it may have 2-3-4 or more computer power supply's inside to power the amp...I have a 1x4 X-Force Base Amp that has 3 computer type power supplys inside.

Thanks all for the input. I completely forgot I had asked this question a couple months back. I did some research after posting and ended up purchasing for home a Pyramid 5 amp Power Supply and a backup cigarette lighter when and if I need to use it for mobile on the road. Honestly it’s all tucked away in the safe for now till I get a decent home base antenna which I’ll be looking at next.

Thanks again for all the info!
