Would clipping D11 on a cobra 29 do much. Would it kill the modulation.

The purpose of the "limiter" circuit is to prevent your radio from over-modulating which causes channel bleedover.. Some shops intentionally disable the AMC to get higher swing on their meters. There are better ways to get extra power out of a 29 instead of clipping..Some guys swear by clipping I am not one of them..

Yes,
They are highly skilled at taking money from those that don't get good advice first.

I know a guy, personally, that has thrown several dollars into that tech-trap.

I would imagine there a few nightmare stories from all ends, truck stops or otherwise..Anyone can "loosen" up a watt meter prior to a customer coming in for service..

I cut D11 on my 29 just for kicks a while back. I don't ever use my 29 so i figured what the heck. It's way louder now thats for sure, but it over modulates slightly causing distortion with the stock mic so I have to use my 636L with it so it sounds good. All in all just a waste of time but good for a laugh.

I cut 2 (I think it was D40 & D41 on my 138) per the tune up manual. Now my 138 slams the meter... But my neighbor says it's not overmodulating with the stock mic. So I'm leaving it that way. Truckers say it sounds great behind my amp as well. Thank god the old mics weren't that good or it probably would be overmodulating!!!!!!!

I'm in Washington DC, so you know what? I don't care if I bleed all 40. Everybody else is so what's the big deal? I think it would be diferent for my base radio on a amp to bleed and wreck it for all in the area, but my mobile... who really cares, it doesn't have that much range, maybe 30-35 miles. If it overmodulates there is a fix for the clipping in the back of the tune up manual I got from Sparky's to add as small resistor. My old Cobra sounds great after peaking and clipping.... I guess I got lucky, as it doesn't overmodulate.

Hehe if it bleeds it splatters....need a scope to really see it..

check it out below, shows what the scope and analyzer shows.

Note the flatties, and Harmonics in the Overmod section....
Those harmonics are the bad guys....peace..

The "Bleedover Police" will get you. As far as I am concerned if a radio doesn't have the guts to bleed it can't be very loud. Overmodulation and distortion is another thing. You can be crushing loud and bleed 40 channels without being distorted.

I totally agree.....
I know a guy with a cobra 25 that had some work done to it, it also has an echo board and a power mic. He likes it, but it's the most distorted overmodulating piece of junk I've ever heard. He drives it so hard that the modulation becomes intermitant, and recently he blew the finals. Clipping won't neccessarily kill a radio, but there sure are a lot of other things that will.

I heard that. There's a guy locally running something (I don't know what) with a typical truckstop snip job and a power mic. He's so over-modulated and distorted it almost sounds like when you're on AM and somebody else is using SSB on the same channel. Of course he wouldn't think of turning it down because "Look at the Modulation Station. A-U-D-I-O-O-O-O. Look at that meter swing."

Whatever. :?

Roger!
I don't know much about radios, but from the couple of radios I've clipped it seems like you can pretty much toss the power mic in the corner. You just don't need it to drive up the modulation. That could be where a lot of people get themselves into trouble, power mics, echo boards, that sort of thing.
My neighbor says my radios sound crisp and clean, per the meter it only goes above 110% if you whistle or yell with your lips wrapped around the mike. I don't whistle during conversations and talk in a normal tone of voice so no problems here. Truckers say it sounds awesome with a RM203 amp so allindications are I got lucky. :D

Running a power mic with a clipped radio is inviting distortion.
Operators that don't know how to run an echo/reverb properly can be just as bad if not worse.......but if a power mic and an improperly adjusted reverb are used with a clipped radio who knows how bad it can get.
