How big can I go?
How big can I go?
Hey guys , I have a quick question , I am sitting up a little radio gear in my work ride and I have a few questions .
Here is what I got :
02 Durango with a 136 amp alternator so how big of a amp could I go with before I upgraded alt ?.....They also offer a OEM 160 amp alternator that I could switch up to if needed
Next question is would I see better performance from a roof mount wilson 5000 or a mag mount ? .....What size hole is needed for a roof mount? I have 3/4" hole in the roof from a VHF antenna ....
thanks

A 3/4 to 7/8 hols is what Wilson says will work..Shane wrote:02 Durango with a 136 amp alternator so how big of a amp could I go with before I upgraded alt ?.....They also offer a OEM 160 amp alternator that I could switch up to if needed
I would say maybe 700 or 1,000 if you upgraded to the 160amp..

The roof mount might do a little better.. I have a buddy that just went from a magnet to a roof and the only noticeable difference was his SWR went down just a hair..

You will be able to run a 1x4 no prob.
If thats the same 136 amp in a dodge ram 1500.. my dad ran a 2x6 with 1 8d battery on his for a long time.. and a 2x8 with 2 8d batteries, apparently those alternators are really stout, and quite a bit under-rated.
I wouldn't suggest a 6 pill or 8 pill.. just due to the fact it's still on paper an insufficient charging system.. but it will take a 1x4 all day long.
Peace,
Josh

if your going to drill a hole in your roof then put a good puck mount in there and use a 10k or a mister coily if not then a wilson 5000 mag mount will work just fine tooShane wrote:Hey guys , I have a quick question , I am sitting up a little radio gear in my work ride and I have a few questions .
