How big can I go?

#42924

Post by Shane »

Hey guys , I have a quick question , I am sitting up a little radio gear in my work ride and I have a few questions .
Here is what I got :
02 Durango with a 136 amp alternator so how big of a amp could I go with before I upgraded alt ?.....They also offer a OEM 160 amp alternator that I could switch up to if needed

Next question is would I see better performance from a roof mount wilson 5000 or a mag mount ? .....What size hole is needed for a roof mount? I have 3/4" hole in the roof from a VHF antenna ....

thanks

I would say maybe 700 or 1,000 if you upgraded to the 160amp..

The roof mount might do a little better.. I have a buddy that just went from a magnet to a roof and the only noticeable difference was his SWR went down just a hair..

What size hole is needed for a roof mount? I have 3/4" hole in the roof from a VHF antenna ....
A 3/4 to 7/8 hols is what Wilson says will work..

Hey Shane, If you look on Eastcoast's website, it tells you how many amps they draw. That might give you some ideas.

Hey thump thanks for the reply .....However I do believe I am going with a 1X2 East Coast Amp......I would love a 2x4 but .....when you have "SPAM" Income and "CAVIAR" taste you have to take what you can get , Plus I have a Smokin Deal on the 1x2 right now

I just got my East Coast 1x2 and can't wait to hook it up. I need to check how many amps on my alternator on the Volvo.

You will be able to run a 1x4 no prob.

If thats the same 136 amp in a dodge ram 1500.. my dad ran a 2x6 with 1 8d battery on his for a long time.. and a 2x8 with 2 8d batteries, apparently those alternators are really stout, and quite a bit under-rated.

I wouldn't suggest a 6 pill or 8 pill.. just due to the fact it's still on paper an insufficient charging system.. but it will take a 1x4 all day long.

Peace,
Josh

My 2X4 draws down my stock alt in the Dodge Ram 360. But, still works if I keep the RPM's up on it.

I would go with the mag mount myself. I just cant justify cuttin a hole in the roof of a perfectly good truck.

if your going to drill a hole in your roof then put a good puck mount in there and use a 10k or a mister coily if not then a wilson 5000 mag mount will work just fine too
