pred 10k, wilson 5000, monkey made

i was talking to a guy on the radio yesterday, and he was saying that the wilson 5000 is a horrible antenna.........he said that it is horrible in the rain and bad weather........he said that i should get a monkey made........so i asked him what he thought about the predator 10k.........he said they were decent, but still insisted that the monkey made was the best..........

i have a wilson 5000 and haven't had any problems with it, but should i worry??????????and from what i see on this site, alot of members here say that the predator 10k is the best, hands down...........would a 10k antenna make that much of a difference compared to a wilson 5000 or monkey made???????????

thanks in advance

Barely noticeable difference.
Stay with what you have until you have a big reason to change. The 10K will probably do better with skip, and it does have an edge on weak signals.
With High Power and SWR issues, the 10K will have a significant advantage.
I have compared the 1000, 5000, 2000, and 10K, and have not been able to see a significant difference on either TX or RX. The Monkey made is probably a very good antenna, the 5000 is not junk, and anybody that says a 10K is only OK, is smoking dope!

Oh, and the 10K has a cool sticker of a donkey kickins azz, an American Flag, and Kale does not use monkeys in his manufacturing process.

You're welcome...

LOL SmallTruck. Kale doesn't use monkeys...now that's too funny!!

The 5000 is not junk. It does fine in bad weather.

I stepped up from a 5000 to a 10K and I will say that I noticed QUITE A BIT of difference on Rx. I haven't had time to do much talking but I'm hearing many more people than before and A LOT cleaner reception. It's also very light.

Monkeymade's are good from what I've gathered but if you damage it, you have to get a whole new antenna.

With the 10K, you can order the part that needs fixing.

It was very easy to tune and tunes well... flat swrs all around

i did not notice to great of a diffrence in RX compared to a 5000, but their is a diffrence, pick ups weaker signals

Whoever told you Wilsons are junk obviously doesn't know jack.

Whats laughable is he claims they are bad in harsh weather.......... put an open coil antenna like a Monkey Made through an ice storm and watch your SWR readings go crazy..................
Channel 32, or sometimes 33 and or 34......

Sounds to me like that guy had a problem with "his" Wilson 5000 and determined that because his wasn't performing right, none of them do.

Monkey Made antennas are very good antennas the greatest advanage the Predator has over it is it's a hella lot lighter and doesn't have the wind drag like a Monkey Made. Then you get into the whole flat coil virus round coil debate, The only concern I have heard with Wilson is that since they were bought out that quailty has suffered......

just my 2 cents.....

I think what the guy was trying to get at, with the Wilson's. Is the newer ones tend to let water get inside the coil area. (least on the 5000 base loaded one) which over a period of time, cause's rust to form, and loss of ground. Quality of the Wilsons has dropped, since they were bought out, from what I've been told also. And I have too agree with this, since I have had several that didn't last a year.

First one I had, was back 6 or 7 years ago, and I never had a problem with it...until it got stolen

But the next few, like I said, lost ground, and if you took the coil section off the truck, and shook-it, you could hear something rattling around in it!

As for as the Predators and Monkey Mades go. Or ANY Antenna that gets coated in ice....All of them will have problems! Easy fix for this, is "Get the Ice off before you start talking on the radio!":D

Coarse, if your driving in freezing rain, only way to keep the ice off, is to be running "Mega-Watt's".

As for Flat Coils vs Round Coils...That's a on going debate, just like coax lengths....

From what I have herd, and tend to believe, is that radio signals on flat coil antennas will tend to radiate from the edge's of the Coils, and not the flat surface of the Coil. Where as a round Coil has no edges, and will radiate in a more omni direction using the entire coil...

But again...depending on "Who you believe is right on this" is up to you.

In my own experiences with both flat, and round coils. It seems to me, that the round coil antennas do work better in DX.
