Don't you wish your antenna was good like mine?

I run a 102" whip off the roof level of my full size 4x4 truck.

Here is a picture of my mount coming out of the bed. The wires that go under the rear taillight are extra ground wires that connect to the body of the vehicle: [Please login or register to view this link]

I have tested every antenna I can think of on this mount including but not limited to every fiberglass whip 2-5 feet long, wilson 2000, predator 10ks and monkeymades. Nothing compares to the 102" whip. The swr, transmit and receive performance just don't do as well. Although the 102" whip is less practical because it dings off everything, I think it works the best.

BEFORE YOU RESPOND: You must try a 102" whip for a week or so compared to your current antenna and look at both contesting antennas with an antenna analyzer to correct any minor tuning problems..

Another advantage: A 102' whip costs around $20. That's $40 or more dollars cheaper than all those other performance antennas that might not work as well.

let me know your results, Talk to you soon.

Well...I use to have a 102" Whip, mounted to my Suburban the same way you have yours!
Image

Pole was a little shorter, but still same mounting. (the mirror bracket I originally had on this, was the same one your using, just stuck this one on to take a pic for someone once)

I agree, the 102" Whip's are hard to beat, But I would caution anyone of mounting one the same way you have yours.

Reason being. Not sure about where you live, but around here, if you go around banging stop lights, and bridges with it. If a cop See's it, you will get a ticket. Guy I know got one. $250! Ticket: Was for Damaging City Property, and Driving a over-sized load, in a unsafe manor...

Judge told the guy, if he gets caught again, the fine would be doubled.

That was in a small town, here in Dallas County...just something to think about.

Other than that. You have the right idea for mounting a 102" Whip, that would be the best way to get one to work. Just not to piratical.

Yes I do agree it is not the most practical setup. There are 7-8 antenna setups like mine on pickup trucks in my area. Only one has had a cop comment about it. He got pulled over for no registration or plate tags and illegal exhaust. The officer commented about the antenna height but did not go any further..

I bought my truck Christmas 2004 and had that antenna on there since. I have been pulled over 2-3 times for other things and they never said anything about the antenna or the magnum s3 bolted up on the dash. I guess its where you live and how **Censored** the cops are that patrol..

I measured it, it is 14' 2" from the ground to the tip of the antenna.

I only hit 1 power line and sparks flew everywhere. The radio was not turned on at the time. I think that's what saved the receiver..

Probably what saved your receiver, was the fact you had it grounded good!

As for the cops go. Depends on the cop. Get one of those "Small Town" type's that think their in the movie "Walking Tall", and your in for trouble!  :D

How many watts were you doing while the sparks were flying?

That's about how I have my Predator 10K mounted.

The radio wasn't even on when I hit the power line..

I was on my way home from a party up north when I noticed a farmer's cows were out on the main road. I pulled in his driveway to inform him and my antenna hit his 3 bare power wires going from his house to the barn and shorted them together. there was a big "pow" and sparks showered the truck. It took me a few seconds to figure out exactly what happened.. It was funny after I knew that the radio still worked. There are still 3 big nicks in my antenna where the wires touched.

Geez Jigga and I though I hit everything under the sun with the Wilson on the roof. Gotta love not having loss from a loading coil though. I got pulled over once for running a stop sign that didn't exist (much to the embarrassment of the cop), and he asked me what the heck the big antenna was for. At the time I was running an Antron 1700 on the trunk lid of my Olds. He wasn't really trying to get me for anything with it, he was just curious.
