When I key up on any SSB channel, the meter hardly moves. Everything works fine on AM. Whats gong on here? The radio is a Texas Ranger 966. Thanks guys.

ssb is pure modulation, no carrier is expelled. the needle should not move untill you speak.

The cool thing about SSB is that since it is all modulation if that is the way your radio is set up you can get out further.
