Whether you're new to using single sideband (SSB) or have years of experience, this forum is the perfect place to ask your questions or provide assistance to those who are new.
I was wondering if you could give me some advice about SSB radios. I'm wanting to get one, but I don't wanna spend lots of money because I"m not working at the moment...
So what I'm looking for is a no-bells-no-whistles SSB radio that still covers the 10 meter band from 28.300 to 28.500 Mhz...
I was talking to a hamwinkie tonight that said that it's opening up and I want to be able to play around....
Any thoughts? Remember, I'm not talking about the best radio....just a solid radio...even if it's used...just one that will probably be used in my house more than in the car....I have the General for the car and that is enough for anyone! LOL!
11 meters will be open anytime 10 meters is open for DX. Cobra 148GTL can be easily modded for 10 meters just as export radios can go to 11 meters. Just my $.02.
I think you should just save up for a used HF tranceiver myself. You can find lots of decent deals on some older units. Buddy of mine bought a month ago or so an Icom IC-720 with matching Icom power supply for $200. Both were in excellent shape, too. I see old FT101's, TS520S Kenwood's, etc. on the auction places for $150 or so sometimes, too. My guess is by the time you fuss with an export or mod'n a 148 Cobra, you could have probably been close to buying an older HF rig. I personally think you'd be happier in the long run going that route...but hey, WTF do I know? :D
PA629, Cobra has a 10 meter (which I'd want modded to do 11 meter as well if possible) It's the Cobra 200 GTL DX...what about that one? There's one on Ebay for $200...
231, the only thing about used is ya never know what you're getting unless you know the person....if it was someone on here selling I'd feel safe...on Ebay, not so much...although your .02 does sound like the wise move to me....
Hey Annie...
You can pick up a used 2510 or 2950 that will do both 10 and 11m for $150-200. If you just want to play on 10m, you can pick up a used realistic htx-100 for under $100 and it should serve you well.

Because I am impulsive and have absolutely no patience.....I bought a radio on Ebay....Cobra 200 GTL DX....allegedly new....the seller has great reviews....supposedly it has just been peaked and tuned...$190.00...
Yeah, I know I shoulda waited....but I knew I would talk myself out of it being unemployed for the moment...lol....hey, there's always macaroni and cheese for dinner for a year...
Please don't tell me it is the worst radio in the world....it covers both 10 and 11 meters...100 watts SSB.....I think I'll put a mount next to the General in my car but primarily I'll play with it in the house, lol....
You guys turned me into a radio geek! LOL...that's a good thing...heh....
usually when a 10 meter radio is converted to ll meters you usually loose a good portion of the 10 meter channels. am i correct on this fellows? i know the galaxy 88 i had only had 1-2 bands of 10 meter stuff. i could be wrong it happens every so often.

I thought of that and emailed the guy before buying it....he said it covers 26 through 29.....I hope I didn't do something royally stupid...lol....but, we'll see....as long as I can experience some of the joys of DXing that ya'll talk about I will be a happy girl....I already have my wonderful General that gets huge compliments so this will just be an experimental radio....figure out how to DX with 100 watts...heh...
Annie i did all my DXing on radios doing 40-45 watts max when i was DXing up in Maine. though i had a Imax 2000 tip about 66 up in the air the air helped a little. it helps to have big power but its not needed if the conditions are working you will get out.

Wow and good luck, you don't need power on 10 meters, I stick with 25 watts and work the world.
When you get your cobra I would hold it down to low power if I was you.
Ten has been open for days along with 11 meters.
See you on 10, where the best hang out on 28.360
