Re: What have you recently acquired for new radio gear ?
Well, I just picked up a Rat shack dynamic studio micropone, nice with case, for 2.99 at the thrift store. This may inspire me to go hi-fi at home. It's probably only a $25 mic, but for what I paid, it was a deal. I also picked up 2 astron power supplies, a 35 and a 70, both with meters, the 70 is in mint shape, the 35 aboutan 8 outta 10. Let's see, on the base, with my icom........studio mic, maybe a mic eq, put the m4v on the astron 70, and i'm 600w on sideband and possibly sounding good. That's tempting to do, but i'll probably just sell it all. I'm wanting a serious mobile, more serious than my current one.

I just picked up a very clean Cobra 148F for $60.00 and a '93 Chevy Suburban for $2000.00. Now I need to start planning a killer mobile setup for the Suburban.......

Rayray, i don't know how big you plan on going but my 16 pill may be up for sale soon. I'm looking into getting a van in the spring and will be selling the 16 for something bigger, and you're almost local, so we could meet up. Keep me in mind unless you're going way bigger.

Re: What have you recently acquired for new radio gear ?
Well I hope Santa's going to be good to all you guys and put a lot of goodies under the Christmas tree or maybe give out gift certificates to our CBRT Sponsors for some new toys haha. I see everyone's really adding some nice things lately---some keepers and some for resale but it's great to see people swingin' deals on the radio merchandise.
Here's one sweet little item I picked up a couple of weeks ago that has the factory Astatic on/off switch and all. I haven't even been able to test it out yet though because it has the old Switchcraft style connector (probably means it was used musically or for PA) and I definitely don't have anything to hook that style to. I have more odd connectors on all sorts of things anymore it's become a real pain in that respect. I wonder if there's a way to properly hook a Switchcraft cord connector to a normal CB mic cord----does anyone know ? If that's a negative, I'll save it for the shop gurus then to figure out. But here's my own Christmas present that came a little early . . .

I think back in the 70's, having a Johnson Viking CB was like owning a Harley Davidson, except Johnson had better quality control. Viking goes all the way back to WWII with the Viking 1... a 160 - 10 meter radio. They are very solid radios, I like to get an early Viking as well.Sporty Mike wrote:Cool!! I'm no historian on Viking, but can tell you my family liked the Johnson radios. My father always had a EFJ-352 in his truck, and as a kid it was the first radio I used back in the 70's, my first contact was in skip land on that radio, I thought the guy was lying when he said he was from another state lol.... I was always amazed that my father had the EFJ-352 in his truck, even in the 90's.... My grandfather owned a Johnson Messenger Base too, not sure which version.... after all these years being around them, to me they are great radios:)
4740 brings back a bit of old memories, it's really no different from the 352...it's a very stout am and ssb radio, I think it's better than some of the modern radios being made today.

Re: What have you recently acquired for new radio gear ?
Nice pic of that old Johnson. EF Johnson made the Viking line of CB and Ham/Amateur radios, among many other types such as the plain Johnson "Messenger" series of rigs. I almost bought the very same radio this Summer from some guy, but I already had two armfuls of stuff and couldn't afford any more. I wish I could've snagged it though!
Here below is another toy Santa just delivered (via PayPal and US Mail lol) to my own home 20 here this morning! I already bought one of these brand new in the box NOS two months ago, but this one here I got today is also in immaculate condition and am very pleased with it. I don't have any CB's currently out and hooked up that have a 1/4-inch phone jack for a mic connection, so honestly I haven't yet tested it but am confident it works as good as it looks. Yes a keen eye will notice it is nearly identical to a certain mic from Yaesu and another nearly identical one from Heil. Hmmm Made in Japan.
Happy radio treasure hunting everyone!

Re: What have you recently acquired for new radio gear ?
This year I got:
my first SSB radio: Ranger 69 FFC2
and
a Texas Star DX 1600 (Sweet 16 ) Amplifier
and
a used (new to me ) 2007 car - now to put them together.....need high amp alternator( had a new one on my truck before it died), better car battery - Oddysey, and an antenna, plus time. Time is my main problem.

Re: What have you recently acquired for new radio gear ?
My thrift store run today netted me a Candle 5 band reciever. I have never heard of Candle, and I can't seem to find anything on the net. But this radio is in great shape for it's age!! It has AM, FM, SW, MB, and air/police (VHF). It has a telescopic antenna that's about 5 feet long!! It works great, there's some strange stuff being broadcast on SW and MB!! I got a new digital camera today too, so maybe I can figure out how to post pics soon!!!
