I just bought a 'Wouxun' KG-UV2D 2 meter/70cm hand held. It does just what it's advertising says, plus it's certified for commercial use (Part-90). PLUS! It has a built in LED flashlight and FM broadcast band coverage. How have I ever lived without having those things??
It works. It cost $130 to my door with a charger. The furnished 'rubber duck' is at least as good as most I've seen on other HTs. None of th 'bells-n-whistles' the big name brands have, but for the price, who cares? And it's got that flashlight thingy!
I'd advise getting the programming cable, the software is free, and together they make programming this thing much easier.

I am thinking seriously about one of those as well Doc. Have you seen the dual band mobile they are coming out with?
Sounds/looks very promising!

I've been wanting to get my HAM ticket for while now. If I start out with new gear I'm probably going for one of these and hook it up to my home made VHF antenna.

Radio 75,
The mobile does sound like it may be a nice radio. Up to now, no one knows what the price will be. I've seen one Mexican place taking reservations and quoting a price of $185. I wouldn't put too much 'faith' in that price, but it does seem to 'fit' with Wouxon's pricing methods. Who knows, it may be right.
That mobile reminds me a lot of an FT-7800, just a few duplications of controls for a 'dual' band type radio. That's certainly a 'stretch' though, don't 'read' anything into it. If the price is close, it would sure be a nice "change" wouldn't it?

BobCB,
I don't think I'd recommend this HT as a 'first' radio, it is NOT that simple to program. And unless you're interested only in very short range stuff, I would recommend an HT at all. Nothing wrong with HTs if you keep their limitations in mind ...

I don't know, I might give one a try, hooked up to an external antenna at 20 feet or so might get me out to a few local repeaters which is really all I'm interested in. I've programmed a Pro-96 scanner by hand before and that kind of thing usually doesn't bother me.
I've thought about starting out with an older used radio for cheap-only problem is that they are hard to come by around here. Everyone wants to take you for a ride price-wise.

Know that feeling! Just tell the one's wanting to take you for a 'ride', that the only way you'll go is if YOU do the 'driving'. Nothing says you gotta get one -right now-, no matter what you might feel like. It's your pockets, who you let into them is up to you...

Hey, good post.
Yeah, funny thing is I'm actually trying to find equipment before I go and get my license(don't worry, I'm not going to transmit without one)-reason being is that I don't want to have my license and rush into buying something just for the sake of getting on the air. My main interest is CB, HAM can come later.

I just picked up an older Cobra 148 gtl that is tweaked and tuned with extra channels and a open clarifier. Very nice radio! I thought it was off frequency when I got it not remembering the whole open clarifier mod haha. I guess that's what happens when you don't own a radio for a few years.

I recently added to my collection/station a LIke New RCI-2970N2,have 3 of them, good radios, but for older gear I finally found one I had been looking for,its a Pierce-Simpson 23ch "Bearcat" base radio,in almost mint condition,I went thru it totally,I had always liked this particular model because it has the nice clock(working!!) and it has the 3 seperate meters, one for TX power scale, and the other 2 are kind of odd, one each for SWR forward and SWR reflected, its kind of rare,I have it working perfect, the hardest part was finding the older style mic for it.THe other I picked up was a Teaberry Stalker TWO,pretty decent shape,AM/SSB,some added channels, did a good job, tied the clarifier, etc,so these Three are new aquisitions, nothings spectacular,I am always adding new things to the station and collection...A NUMBER 1

Figured I'd do an update on all of my Christmas gear. The Workman DM1000 Power/Echo mic and the Superstar Mighty Mini base mic both work perfectly-very loud. The Workman 3 position coax switch also works perfectly. And the RS Power SWR meter also works like a champ.
It feels good to finally have a decent meter(my old P.O.S. Micronta was terrible). Surprisingly, my $2 Cobra 29 deadkeys 10 watts and swings to 40-45. I also managed to use it to tune a Cobra 19 so that it deadkeys 10 watts and swings 30. I'm satisfied. Expect video reviews on my youtube channel soon.

Santa Clause finally "gave" me my Cobra 29 LXLE....ordered it from Sparky's back in October
Plus I recently traded a Wilson 5000 magmount for a Cobra 29 Chrome (not black chrome) with echo board and blue nitro knobs sweeet. And I drove a hundred miles last week to pick up a FREE Maco Y-quad antenna.

I bought a Maco v5000 from a buddy of mine last week and that antenna seems is like night and day from my Antron 99. No more coming through telephones and I seem to be getting out a lot better as well.
