Re: What have you recently acquired for new radio gear ?
Well, I've acquired a lot of gear lately, and kept it just long enough to thicken my wallet. A month ago I was broke as far as my mad money but had a yaesu 101 and amp, and my ft450. I sold the 101 line for $600. Then, I bought an estate setup that was a kenwood 140, supply, tuner, antenna, mic, for $300 and a complete heathkit 101 line for $200, sold it all the same week and ran across a smokin deal on a camaro that a friends kid got tired of for $1500 that I have for sale for $3250. At that point I was broke but still had the 450 and a pile of other odds and ends I had nothing invested in, so I got to selling again. Now, I'm sitting on the camaro and have a pile of deals working so I can fund the purchase of a big estate collection for $900 and I have to have the money by Saturday, so it is a hectic week. I have to turn that stuff into cash FAST because I just committed to another estate collection that I managed to hold off having to pay for until late next week. This stuff is growing the whole time. In a few weeks I hope to be in really good shape and still dealing. I need to fund a disney cruise, a diamond bezel for the wife's rolex that I bought with dumpster dive money 2 years ago, a keydown van, and an old sportster a buddy in cali is selling me that I plan to ride all the way home.
Now for me, I bought a mint, with the box and all philly made Grant XL from Circuit Breaker and it is excellent. The feel of the real uniden/cobra radios of yesteryear is hard to beat for my desired operation. I'll put it in the monster mobile van for some super clean audio into a setup that makes my current one look like a father's day cb radio starter kit. Now that's what I'm talkin about.

Re: What have you recently acquired for new radio gear ?
I picked up a Hal Communications MKB-1 Morse Keyboard for $10 today, I have no idea how much this is really worth but I figured it was worth the gamble, it's pretty cool. It allows you to use CW by typing on a keyboard rather than using a paddle, for example: you press F and it automatically generates the CW tone for that letter, letting you type entire sentences in CW. It has 4 knobs on the front, "Tone", "Weight", "Volume", and "Speed". It works just fine from what I can tell although I don't have any HAM radios to test the output on, but its internal speaker gives out the correct tones and everything so It should work fine. I don't know if I'll hold on to this or not, might be a good Ebay item in the future.

I just picked-up a used Galaxy DX-2547 base unit thats in great shape(sweet) I have a Mura DX-2000 amplified desk mic that I hooked-up to it seems to work well with the radio. It dead keys at 2 watts and swings to about 15.It seems that my old SBE-console V will now be retired for good now and be put on display on a shelf here at my QTH. I also picked up a vintage Lafayette SSB-140 Base unit that has a GC bullet type amplified desk Looks like a Turner plus 2 but its black in color from around the same time era (mid to late 1970's).It dead keys at about a watt and swings to 6 and 10 on ssb its an old 40 ch. unit-luv them both!!

Re: What have you recently acquired for new radio gear ?
Well i just bought a Kenwood TM-261 mobile rig a MFJ -874 meter and a Diamond dual band antenna for 2 meters and 70cm. The radio i bought belonged to an older gentleman who has been a Ham for years he was just cleaning up his shack and had the radio laying around . I got it for 75 dollars and it works flawlessly. The meter and antenna came from Ham Radio Outlet they are real good people to do buisness with.

Re: What have you recently acquired for new radio gear ?
Went to my first ever hamfest today and had a great time. I didn't get to meet any of the local CB'ers(they all stayed home because of the rain), but I still had a great time. And I got some deals!!
I got the following:
Motorola HT200 (circa 1962!!) for $5
Kenwood TH-41BT 440 Handheld for $10
Azden PCS-6000 2meter mobile for $40
I didn't get any CB gear because I've got plenty already, but all of the stuff I did get should give me a good start in HAM radio.

Re: What have you recently acquired for new radio gear ?
Just got my Grim Reaper Competition 8 Mosfet box, this thing is awesome!! The only one that uses the actual RF Mosfets (Mitsu RD100HHF1) and I am cruising 1200w peak on 13.8 volts with a 15 watt input. Also put my bird meter in the dash and bought a old "salt crystal" D104 and had it completely gone through and a new case put on it. Had everything tuned together and walla, here we are!! Gonna have another 8 built with a combiner so I can have a 16, that will be in a few months though.
Love this amp, runs hard, runs cool, puts out CRYSTAL clear audio and can be keyed down for LONG convo's with no problem whatsoever.

Well , well you guys are really racking up that's for sure!! Snowman , I gotta say , that's one sweet setup. Bird meter in the dash is definately a showstopper!! As for me , I've gotten a Cobra 29 Army Strong from Sparky's , a Realistic pro-89 , Realistic pro-97 , and a Pyramid ps52kx power supply , and a Galaxy base mic.

Thanks Sporty!! Yea, that meter gets more attention than the entire system does at this point!!! This thing is rockin man, its like this car was built for a big radio. I love that Mosfet amp, I will never pop another "pill" again after the crystal clear audio out of this thing!! Have a great day Sporty, talk soon!

Nice install. I hear the sound of them is fantastic. So, I have to ask, what kind of amperage is that amp drawing at 1500w?

Re: What have you recently acquired for new radio gear ?
Well Dr, its not as low as everyone claims. Its pulling anywhere from 125-150 depending on how hard I am pushin it. I have an extra gel battery in the trunk running in parallel and it keeps up for the most part. If Im sitting at idle for too long the lights will dim a bit after a long convo. You did mention the best thing about these, CLARITY!! It is unbelievable how clear this amp is, its like nothing I have ever heard aside from HiFi audio systems!!
BUT, this thing does not get hot like my old pill box, you can leave it keyed for the most part eternally without any major heat build up. I talked skip and local today for 3 hours straight, pretty much never getting off the key for more than a minute at a time and when I parked in my garage, I opened the trunk to check it. I was VERY pleasantly surprised to find it at a luke warm temperature!!!

Re: What have you recently acquired for new radio gear ?
Interesting. I wonder how efficient it is. A low pass filter in line may clean up the meter a bit and get a better picture by reducing any harmonic garbage but it sounds like you're in business. If it is 60% efficient, 150 amps at 15v is what 2250 watts, 60% of that and you're well north of an honest KW. If you're getting dimming your electrical may be getting into the 12v or less range, still decent numbers, still 900w plus I'd think. I have no clue how efficient mosfets are, maybe someone will offer info.

Re: What have you recently acquired for new radio gear ?
Went to the yearly Tulsa, OK hamfest last night. Best hamfest I've been to in 4 or 5 years. CB stuff was everywhere and... surprisingly... selling fairly quick. I picked up a SBE Console II with original mic / manual and included Turner +3 desk mic for $40. Been using it all day... awesome radio! Also got a Sears Roadtalker AM/SSB base for $10 in the box... a small Eico tube CB for $5... and finally found a variac that I've been wanting for months for $30.
Sure enough I passed on the hamfest "deal of the night"... a restored working Tram Titan II for $75 The hamfest was huge and I wanted to look around before committing to it, but it was long gone when I made it back. Didn't really know what it was when I first saw it. Won't make that mistake again!

Just (a couple of weeks ago) got a Cal-Av Mark V spring. The guys at Cal-Av did a custom black-oxide finish for me. This is the finest mobile spring on the planet. It is stainless and black and can hold anything you wanna throw at it. Nothing beats that. I have a new mount that I just finished a production run on. Only thing left is to pick em up from the Zinc plater. This heavy duty spring is goin right on top. Pics will be on my facebook in a couple of days. BTW, I am mounting it on a new puck as well.

Re: What have you recently acquired for new radio gear ?
Well this is old but new to me. My buddy who like me is a gospel musician gifted me with a Hallicrafters CB-3A. It keys strongly (good D/K) but the audio is weak. I'm thinking do to age the diaphram in the mic is withered. If someone knows where I can find a schematic or service info for it I'd reeeaaaallly appreciate it. I want to see if I can wire a different mic just to A/B test and make sure it's nothing deeper than the mic.

yessir, that was it on pg. 9... I just hope that my cobra handheld will work. The info from the site shows the original mic as a ceramic type but not if it's lo or hi impedance. Thanks again !!!
