I just purchased TWO "REALISTIC" TRC-48's.One from fleabay & one from Craigslist.BOTH look pretty clean but BOTH need a little bit of MINOR work. They do transmit & recieve & BOTH have GREAT audio as did the one I owned as a child. These are PART of my BRING BACK my CHILDHOOD rigs collection! }:>) The second rig also came with a REALISTIC handheld power microphone that works GREAT! Each cost me $40 or less shipped & the least priced one had the power microphone with it. }:>)

I bought a near mint condition Browning Golden Eagle Mark III that does a WAYYYY better job than any ranger radio I have ever owned. I also stumbled accross a guy who had several D&A amplifiers that were DOA, 3 phantoms, 1 Maverick, 1 hornet, and 1 raider. I am in the process of rebuilding them as we speak. I have one of the phantoms up and running now, dead keys 400 and swings 850. Not bad for giving $50.00 for all the amps!

A couple of months ago I broke my Johnson 4740, haven't been able to fix it (yet), so I broke down and bought a Texas Ranger TR-696FD1. The store I got it from said it was their last one and they have been discontinued. I also purchased an Astatic D104M6B mic. I haven't opened it up yet but the performance of this radio was surprising and its on frequency. I well be doing some mods to it in the next couple of months.

Went again today to help my relatives clean out my grandparents home. In addition to getting all kinds non radio related antiques, I also got some radio gear. I got 2 old, all metal Fedtro PA speakers. Judging from the quality of these I'd say they came off of an old patrol car(grandfather was a police officer; already got a whole bunch of antique police gear from my last visit including a Federal Signal siren and light). VERY loud, I tested it out and it was so loud that my neighbors stepped outside to see what was going on! I also found a brand new Micronta Field Strength/SWR tester and a Calectro analog multimeter. In addition to that I also got 2 jumper cables with PL-259's already soldered on; one is 2 feet the other is 3. I also picked up a big spool of 10 gauge electrical wire for antenna-making purposes and 2-50 foot sections of small diameter guy wire.
There's also lots of pipe and misc. fishing rods I can use for Moxon parts and masts I'm getting next time.

Went to a local estate auction today with quite a bit of CB stuff. Ended up with a Cobra 25LTD Classic for $6... a Cobra 148GTL for $12... and a nice two tone gold Seiko 17 jewel automatic wristwatch for $3. Could of had a complete Yaesu FT-757GX HF setup with matching desk mic, speaker / power supply, and SWR / wattmeter for $195... but I couldn't test it and my luck is never good when shelling out significant cash for untested stuff.

My latest finds. The first is a Kenwood TK-350 uhf radio. The price? Free! It used to be a police radio for the department my dad works for. They last used these over 10 years ago and have since upgraded to a modern digital system, we found it buried in the bottom of his trunk and he let me have it. Amazingly everything, including all 3 batteries, still work beautifully. Even has the Kenwood speaker mic. I'm going to reprogram it for some UHF ham freqs since it currently has old police freqs on it. Just have to break out the old pc and boot up DOS and it'll be good to go.

The next item was also free! It is an old General Electric shoulder mic for a police radio. I found this when I was helping some relatives clean out my grandparent's house. My step-grandfather was a police officer for the same dept. my dad works for now. He retired in 1986 and has since passed away. This mic went to his old police radio. The next time I go to help out I'm going to be on the look out for it. It may or may not be of any use to me, but I think it's cool that he used this on duty back in the day. If I can find his old radio somewhere that would be a pretty unique addition to the shack.

Anyone have any guesses as to what model radio the shoulder mic goes to? I know it would be UHF, and more than likely a GE brand; but that pin configuration keeps me guessing.

So recently, I got rid of the Cobra 146GLT mobile radio, the DX66V, and the 12vdc power supply and a 4-transistor linear amp and a 2-transistor that had some problems. In replacement, I got the following::
A Teaberry T-Dispatch. I P&P'ed to about 3w DK and up to 18w at full modulation.
A Cobra 89GLT Base. This means that I could get rid of all the wires and **Censored** that the wife didn't like all over. P&P'ed to about 5w DK and 22w full modulation.
And lastly, a HY-Gain Model 403 Tube amp. 'Nuff said. Keying up at about 20w or so, and swinging to past 125W!!!! Yahoo!!!

Hey Beer, 2 of my friends have installed the gain master just in the past few days. One of them has really noticed a improvement over the Antron 99. The other says about the same as his Imax. keep us posted.

So what is that red coiled action at the bottom of the gainmaster? Is it a built in RF choke? If it is, someone needs to tell them that you don't need that many turns, but too many won't hurt. It looks good the way they have it on there.

I just purchased a Texas Ranger TR-696FD1 a couple of weeks ago for in my pickup. It doesn't have all that unnecessary junk (rb, tb, echo, etc.) and mine right out of the box was on frequency. I did not get it peaked & tuned, I just added an Astatic D104M6 mic. The audio is loud and no drifting issues yet. When I get a chance I will do a mild tune, clarifier mod, and freq mod.

Just wondering, is the freq counter on that radio active meter or it is just showing where you "should be"?

Hey beermaster,
First I am glad to read about your success with the HOA and your antenna, the pics look good on the roof. The radio only shows transmit frequency and follows the channel numbers. The last digit shifts a couple of hz on transmit, could be from voltage drop. That will change when I do the clarifier mod, it will follow the frequency. This radio has surprised me traveling down the road making skip contacts (ssb) barefoot.
