Re: What have you recently acquired for new radio gear ?
Went to a local hamfest a few days ago & thought I would post up the stuff I got. Some I may keep, some I may sell, not sure yet.
I got an old Tektronix Type 454 150mhz oscilloscope for radio work, since my old B&K 1460 has only 10mhz bandwidth (still use it for audio amp repair etc.). The Tek scope was supposed to work fine, but I would say some of it is questionable, slight triggering problem, & the volts / div steps won’t zero on all settings, but the position control compensates ok on most settings. It was $40 so I can’t complain I guess, I will use it a while then probably sell it for a better or at least fully functional scope. Seems fairly accurate otherwise, it measures DC voltage accurately & measuring RF seems fine. Came with a copy of the manual / service manual & two probes.
Also got a Uniden GRANT XL for $25 with a microphone; I did a quick test on it & it seems to work but does need cleaned up a little & fully checked out. It has upper channels in the tone switch which the guy told me when I bought it. I will likely fix it up & sell it, I don’t plan on keeping this item (had to buy something to resell to make some of my money back! HAHA).
Also picked up an old Heathkit IG-102 signal generator which came with the original manual & what looks like the sales receipt from 1976! I paid $25 for it. It works but is not real stable & REAL touchy when trying to set it to a particular frequency, might need new tubes. Not sure if I will try to fix it for personal use or sell it for someone to restore & buy a generator I can get better use out of. I may play around with it though, it looks pretty clean inside & out.
I got a cantenna dummy load from the guy I got the generator from, he said the dummy load worked fine & he would hook it up & show me, so I figured I would take his word for it, but it don’t! I got home & hooked it up & the SWR was around a 1.6 or 1.7 or something, what the heck, so I hooked up the ohm meter & it reads about 83 ohms, took it apart hoping for a loose connection, but the resistor measures the same. He wanted $10 for it but I got it for $5, oh well.
Plus I got some miscellaneous wires for a $1, power supply chassis’s for parts which were $2 for the pair. Also got two small project boxes for a buck each. Got four rack-mount chassis’s that I thought I would use for some projects, they are actually for TV broadcast systems or something, but I wanted the chassis, only a dollar a piece, the guy said they worked though.
Last up I got a box full of free QST magazines, figured they might be nice to browse through!
I think that’s everything! Had a lot of fun browsing at all the stuff there, I enjoy going to the hamfests. I should have posted last year of all the stuff I got there, I guess I still can at some point.
Here are some pics of what I got this year: (the picture of the scope displaying a waveform was a quick test of the GRANT XL when testing the stuff out feeding it with a 1K sinewave)

Re: What have you recently acquired for new radio gear ?
I have gotten the same radio recently, 2950DX. Works great on 10m however I may have to do a little freq alignment,Island_0860 wrote:Hey... Why would we want to stop at just one find !

Connected it up to the R2001 for some quick checks and its working fine.
No Mods done on this one...(just the 11 Meter one).. and no golden screwdriver
Will be playing with both the Cobra and the Ranger this weekend.
Off to search to find out how it can Display CB channels ...FUN
Hope to talk to dirtyjob via DX.. ranger to ranger this weekend.

RCI 2950 DX and IMAX 2000, LMR-400 and all hardware to mount on roof. Waiting on temps to cool off a little to get into attic to run cable. Galaxy DX949 on the UPS truck from Sparky to mount in Scion XD will use Wilson 1000. Just getting back into CB, now to find that SWR meter.

Re: What have you recently acquired for new radio gear ?
I think I got one heck of a score today. I bought a Radioshack DX-392 shortwave radio for $15. I found an ad on Craigslist and the guy selling it wanted $20 but agreed to take $15 instead. This thing is in excellent shape and works perfectly.
It has a digital display, will pick up both AM and SSB, and will cover from 1.711 to 29.999Mhz in addition to broadcast FM and AM stations. It also has a built-in cassette player and alarm clock. It's like the jack-of-all-trades shortwave rig. For $15 it sure beats paying $$$ for a new shortwave radio. Can't wait to get it hooked up to a longwire antenna.

Re: What have you recently acquired for new radio gear ?
Well. We evidently lost a bunch of entries here but just this weekened, I stumbled into some good gear. I had an old long range TV antenna that was in my attic that I found, for free next to a dumpster, 10 years ago. I recently took it out of the attic, posted it on Craigs List, stating that I was open to trades, listing a ton of items I like, radio stuff included.
Some guy emailed and had some "junk". His junk was worth more than mine, but for my old free TV antenna and me kicking in $20, pluse some TV coax, and make sure you're sitting down here..............I got a Bird 4304 Wattmeter, which has the built in scales for 15,50, 150, and 500w, with reflect switch, a Digimax freq counter, a Bird 150w dummy load, and a few other older bench items that are worth around $400++ combined according to fleabay completed sales. The other stuff was a tone encoder/decoder test unit, sime sinad deal, an FM deviation test deal, a business band uhf talkie, trea$ure trea$ure trea$ure. I'll keep the birds and the freq counter, sell the other off and load my wallet for the next deal. Now I'm ready to monitor some O-Fishull CB radio "Bird watts". WOOO Hooooo.

I grabbed a $77 Black Friday Cobra 29lx because it was too cheap to pass up. I've ran it in the mobile a few hours and despite the hissy receive, it actually hears pretty good, just takes to mental adjustment on my part, but I'm hearing stations 40 miles away just like on the higher end radios. Stock it is at 3w carrier and 12 or so on a pep meter but it does need variable power. As many features as it has, I'm not sure why it isn't at least a menu item, still not a bad little rig and looks modern on the outside, but still old on the inside.

dr, $77 is a great deal. Would have been hard to pass up on. As you know you can never have enough gear. lol
I just picked up a used Yaesu VX-3 for a older fellow who had a hard time using the small buttons. All boxes, program cables, case ect. $125. It looks to be brand new.

Purchased a Cobra 148GTL this week and have matched it with a K30 magnetic antenna. Difficult to say how it talks right now since skip is rolling so bad. The airwaves are much different than they were wen I first jumped in here in the mid 70's. Radio looks and sounds good. Just waiting for some feedback on the transmit.

Re: What have you recently acquired for new radio gear ?
grabbed a mkIII :
someone set up a digital vfo on the transmitter and i couldnt get it to even throw a carrier in am mode, it did transmit on ssb though.
the receiver works and looks great
i hooked up another transmitter "s23" to the receiver and talked on her all day with great reports.
looks like i will be sending the transmitter out for repair or keep it for parts when i pick up another mkIII transmitter

On the 13th I posted the acquisition of a current model Cobra 148GTL which I've matched with a K30 magnetic mount antenna. Today I've added a Cobra 19DX IV cuz the price was right. I'll match it with the same antenna. I'm starting to recognize the old symptoms!

I just picked up an FM service monitor in working condition for just over $100. I'm on a roll for good deals this year.
I just finished painting it so I thought I'd show it off.

SUPER DEAL...I saw you guys mention "Cushman" when I came on site yesterday in the shoutbox, but thought you were talking about the old motor scooters...lol...showing my generation gap I guess. Nice piece of equipment you bought there.

I grabbed one of the 29LXs and the Bearcat 880 from Amazon on cyber Monday.drdx wrote:I grabbed a $77 Black Friday Cobra 29lx because it was too cheap to pass up. The 29 functions well enough - to be expected for a 29, but I'm not a huge fan of the display.
I'm really not a fan of the Bearcat. While the controls are laid out well, it feels cheap, the display is not bright enough during the day, and the speaker is very tinny. It seems to hear well and get out well, but not well enough to make up for its other annoying nuances.
Next for me will be the Stryker 955. I've been reading as much info as I can find, watching videos, etc... Looks like its right up my alley.
I just had a big final put in my 29 NW WX BT and it's great! I love the classic layout of it and it has been getting some good reports back from others on the road. I think it and the Stryker will be my go-to radios. The LX may become a base station in the house at some point.
I need therapy!
