#124413

Post by 80 meter man »

We now have a new sub-section to the CBRT. Here it is. Ask all your amateur radio questions here. Please read the rules before posting here. We want this section to work and not end up like the last one. Standard CBRT rules apply in addition please read the sub-section header here-- [Please login or register to view this link]

I hope no one takes this wrong, but..........I'm a fan of both genres of the radio world. We dip into a little ham talk here now and then, but this is CB radio talk . com, not HAM bla bla. I think it positively shows the world that CB'ers, particularly we as a group on here, are open to the ham world and that we don't bash it. And, we offer info to the interested. That is something you'd rarely see on a ham site when CB is mentioned. Wouldn't we just all go to a ham site for continued hamness? Or would bozo open up a Ham radio talk . com? Again, read the name of the site. Do we have a spot for radio controlled airplanes? Do we have an area entitled "101 ways to maximize your TV remote"??? nope. I'm a member of both tribes, strongly favor this one, and don't care to smell too much bacon on here. I know where the butcher shop is, and I'll go there when I want my ham. -drdx

We don't have a TV remote section but we do have a scanner shortwave automotive etc... So this minor sub-section does not IMHO threaten the sanctity of the site

Well this is a big 10-4 fellers and looks like we got us a convoy rollin'. ....But now wait a minute....you guys remember in that Convoy song from the 70's when the line comes up "In a reefer haulin' hogs" So now I says to my self...now wait a minute dag nabbit, ...you don't haul livestock (hogs) in a refrigerated trailer....so its's like....it's like....it's like what's up with that man ??? but anywho, been a CB'n fer there abouts 31 years and that thought scares even myself. Then the slight technical advancement  into the ranks of hamdom for about 13 years. Yeah this darn radio thingy is awesome!.... man and and even todays modern big rigs are still less dangerous than guns and most of us manage to cause only nominal amounts of damage...so it's all good right?

The Monkey says " Radio stuff is cool and I command you all to go forth and multiply and have fun with radios at every turn and over every hill and dale "

I'd listen to The Monkey if I we're y'all. I pity the fool who don't do what The Monkey say!

I think this is a great idea. I have questions about HAM as well as CB so this "One STOP" idea is great. I hope we can keep this part as cool as the rest.

The new amateur section has been up for 24 hours now and so far so good. We have had two question asked with some great answers. If you would like to know anything about amateur radio come visit the new Ham Radio Hang Out. That is the title of the new section. The new section is located in the off topic area down at the bottom of the home page. I'm going to post some reviews of some radios and some antennas I have and if you have any amateur gear that you would like to talk about or post a photo please feel free to do so. We just had 8 inches of snow here and another foot coming on Sunday so I wont be able to take some photos of my new VHF/UHF antenna array. I just put it up and it looks like a ships mast. It was a very low buck deal. The antennas I had in the shop and the mast I welded some old galvanized fence post together. It came out to be 27 feet of mast with a cross bar at 21 feet. The ends of the cross bar have a 220Mhz j-pole and a 440Mhz j-pole. The top of the mast has a triple 5/8 wave 2 meter antenna. This is made up of three 5/8 wave sections of antenna stacked one on top of another. It blows my single 1/2 wave 2 meter antenna away both on receive and transmit. I can talk with my friend who is 22 miles away as the crow flies with 9 watts and pin his needle and he is pinning my needle also. I love the new setup. The top of the 2 meter antenna is the exact same height as my Imax-2000 at 54 feet. My house sits at 650 feet so the antennas at there tips are over 700 feet above see level. I know for some of you that seems like nothing but around here that's very high. I can hear mobile stations all over the New England area.

I think it's a great idea :D I've been into radio for 25 years and a ham for 18 of it.
My only complaint is the tunnel vision of people in both groups who think one or two
bad experiences they've had defines the whole group.

Hams are not better than CB'rs...although most of us had to work quite a bit harder
to get our privileges than just walk into a truck stop. Hams behave badly...just as
CB'rs do...just go on 20m or 80m during a turf war.

I havent had the chance to listen to the hf bands yet but I heard that 20m, 75m, and 80m is a mirror to the 11m band with the way they do and talk. I heard this from other hams that those bands are the cb of ham radio. as soon as I get off my lazy but and go get my general I will grab up some equipment and hit the hf bands and see what I hear. :) so far I enjoy gettin on 2m and talk some. I dont get on as much as I would like to with working 7 days a week but I do grab the mic from time to time and chew the fat some.

I am in total agreement with you preacherman. I think there should be peace between the groups myself. Thanks for being such an important part of this forum.

Its a good idea to have a ham section. That way, ham related chatter can stay in a single place.

Don't expect too many hams to flock over here though. Many hams view CB in a dim light, where its considered a kind of "social taboo".
Punkin Head wrote:I havent had the chance to listen to the hf bands yet but I heard that 20m, 75m, and 80m is a mirror to the 11m band with the way they do and talk.
Its 75m, the voice section. being a solar minimum now, 75meters is where its at, in the night-time hours. Just like CB, but all on SSB and old men. They even jam the few frequencies set aside for AM on 75meters. What keeps this band out of reach for some is that antennas must be 7x the size compared to antenna for 11 meters. 80 meters is primarily the CW portion of that band, entirely different.

80 meter man mentioned his vhf/uhf antenna array... don't forget the SSB activity on the lower end of 2 meters. This is where the DX can be had, but antenna polarization is critical. Often they use horizontal on 2m SSB. Usually with the wrong polarization, signals are at least 20dB down. Its not like HF where polarization is randomized by skip.

So far, it looks like this little corner of the website is doing quite well! Congrats to the dudes who made it for us!

I've been a ham for about 5 years now, and I found that CB radio was a stepping stone for a lot of people who got into ham. Other hams got into the hobby without ever having any radio experience at all in the past, and then there is the cross-section of people who WERE CB'ers but deny this vehemently when they are around other hams. You see, CB isn't cool to talk on OR talk about when you become an amateur. Most hams think that if you were a CB'er, you need to throw it in the trash and only work on the ham bands, because ham operators are of a higher "calibre"...

Balderdash, hogwash, baloney. I'm a CB'er first and a CB'er for life, loud and proud! I'm glad the mods created this section here because it gives me a chance to talk to other hams who are proud of their CB operations. You'd be surprised the lengths some amateurs go to to suppress CB radio as a whole, and some of them even go to the ARRL (The Amateur Radio Relay League) to lobby AGAINST CB! WHAT GIVES, MAN?!!??!?

Yep, it's totally true. The FCC was willing to rescind the old edict that made contacts over 150 or 250 miles illegal, but the hams lobbied the FCC, with the help of the ARRL, to keep the law in place. Why? They HATE CB, for several reasons:

1: The 49-Year Grudge: In 1958, the 11 meter band (27 mHz) was taken away from the amateur community and turned into a multi-use radio type service with paper licenses and callsigns unlike ham radio. Hams got upset by this, and some old the older hams are still mad. These guys need to get over it!

2: Lack of Enforcement. The FCC doesn't care much for 11 meters. They turn a blind eye to linears, export radios and all that good stuff. This makes hams boiling mad, because they want to see us crucified, eyes gouged out, castrated, and left for dead.

3: CB Ended The License Requirement. At least when there were licenses, there was a semblance of order. Around 1976 though, things got VERY out of hand, and they got way worse after the licensing requirement was dropped.

4: DX Capability: If the hams had their way, CB would be theirs again, and we'd go back to the original CB of the 1940's on the UHF band (high 460's). Since the CB band is an HF band, it has the tendency to be a good DX band. Hams don't want to see CB'ers DX or have fun. Plain as that.

So aside from commenting on the reasons for tensions between CBers and hams, I was able to praise the creation of this sub-board. I also forgot what I originally wanted to talk about. I think I'm getting old, dammit....
