1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Alternator Upgrade
1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Alternator Upgrade
Hey there,
One of my buddies is looking for a big alternator for his Jeep Grand Cherokee. We found the powermaster and maxx alternators at 165 amps, but he is looking for something like 250 amp without adding a second alternator. With a 4.0L inline 6 in that engine bay there's really no room for something bigger. Anyone know where we can get a stocker rebuilt for higher amperage or know where we can get a big alternator? If we have to get a big alternator that is not compatible, we need to find a mounting bracket.
He's running like 5k watts in his stereo, lol. Competition style stereo system. It's easy to find alternators for most V8's, but for this thing it's getting hard to find parts.
Thanks in advance.

I have a 99 cherokee sport, and got a 165 for it. I was told that I could get like a 200 or something that would fit in the stock position, with very minor work to the stock bracket. It is an easy remove and install on the stock replacement. I've laid under mine a few times looking and I believe you could fab a bracket and mount 2 alternators in the same area that the one factory one is in, but I have never seen it done. Surely, with as many 4.0 operators out there with power demands, someone has done it I'm sure. What does the 4wd crowd do? I know that they mount those power welders on and that stuff has to go somewhere. I also thought about relocating the battery and ac line on the passenger side and putting one over there. As my jeep gets older, and the ac dies, I'm going to rip out the compressor and go in right there with a big leese .

I've told my buddy that we need to just put a seperate charging leece in there, but it is tight. I saw that PowerMaster and Maxx make 165 amp alternators, but his "stereo mentor" told him he needs 250 amps. What brand is that 165 and how's it working for ya doc?
I can see why that alternator would be 165 amp max. That thing is tiny compared to my F250's, lol.

I have a loadboss 165 from Alterstart. I did have the 1st one fail on me after only a couple of months, but the replacement works fine. Jesse James has done business with them longer than I have. My only complaint is that I think my stock one was better at idle in the voltage department. I'm sure that if I took a little time and installed a smaller pulley on it that it would do a little better. But, rolling down the road, or off idle at about 1000 rpm's or more, it is nice and strong, even under load. I'm running the ac at times, and it does fine along with my setup, although I don't push alot of power. We're only talking about a kilowatt max here, but when I am running around, I often run a higher deadkey than most, in the 500 watt range, so filter that info as it relates to your setup. I do run a red optima under the hood and another in the rear. I did keep my stock one laying around as a backup, with plans to run it for the jeep and my 165 or whatever as a 2nd one once I make the time to figure out how to get 2 on there. -drdx
