250 amp alternator with a smaller pulley

#142726

Post by chubbypigfarmer »

Ok, so I just installed a motorcity reman (GM STYLE CS-144) 250 amp alternator and it comes with a smaller pulley so it spins more rpm's at idle speed. Problem is I think I'm getting some belt slippage because it can't even keep up with my heater motor and head lights since i installed it. Motorcity reman suggests a 1/2 " shorter belt which I will buy tomorrow and I already installed a new idler pulley assembly which is putting more tension on it than the old one was but i'm Just curious if others have had any belt slipping issues with the higher amp alternators and what you may have hadto do to solve this problem?

i got a 250 for my 99 ford windstar....from the same place, it will slip on some vehicles and a shorter belt is just what you need. Did you make an extra run for your charging wire to the battery? If not, do that too.

Bingo. I was going to mention that. Motor City Reman recommends you replace the factory hot cable from the alternator to the battery. For a big 250a like that one, they suggest a alt gauge wire! That thing is huge. So did you change out the battery to alternator wire?

I'd try the belt first, but using insufficient size wire is only going to limit your alternator from producing the full amperage it's made to produce.

i also had the same problem when i installed my one wire 200amp alt. from Motor City Reman in another mobile a few years back.the 2 belts that were used on the 2 pulley system were from Mexico and when i got the American made ones i didn"t have any problems.at first i took there alt. back and it checked fine and they went outside and noticed the belts and said that was the problem.Mexico products,

Yeah I replaced the alt wire before I ever started it up, I ended up buying a new dayco belt in stock length and its fine now and I always have the option of going down 1/2 inch if the need arises. I was a little disapointed that on idle the bigger alt's don't help but maybe 20 amps, that is the only area that was a little weak on my stock CS-144 alt, at a cruise it was keeping up with my galaxy 95t2 and sweet 16 just fine.
