16 volt YELLOW TOP BATTERY?
Can I run any 12 volt radio or pillbox on this battery>?
What about charging it? Can it charge off an ordinary 12 volt car battery trickle charger?
What about putting a MOTOR MAUL in my car? Can I use this 16 volt as my other isolated battery on a 12 volt system??
If you have any answers that might lead me to the correct decisions, please let me know.
Thanks in advance,

Most modern mobile transceivers are designed to run at 12 volts. 15 volts is pushing it and 16 volts just might cause it to give up its smoke.unit199 wrote:Can I run any 12 volt radio or pillbox on this battery>?

I know the gel battery is tempting and there is nothing wrong with them but I believe you would be better served buying an upgraded altenator from one of our sponsors. You can stay with your present voltage system and have more amperage available.
By the way, love your avatar, back in the '70s I went by the handle Wild Bill and my Q' cards had that very same image!

Give up its smoke ! Something I havent heard in many years. Do you know what runs through the power wired in your vehicle ? Voltage ? Current ? NOPE ! SMOKE runs in them there wires. If you dont believe me, just cross um and see what comes out.Blaze1024 wrote:

I have a funny story about that ( you would have to pay for me to tell ! ) from a class I took many years ago in GM C3 computer technology.
Not quite right. A vehicle charging system runs around 13.5 - 14 volts and amps are determined by the alternator, regulator and sometimes the onboard computer.Linx wrote:

Will your car or battery charger charge it to 16V? No.
I run a yellow top battery in my truck with a 120 amp alt rebuilt to a 160 amp unit. My charging system runs right around 15 to 15.5 volts. The slight step up has not had any adverse effects on anything however my sound system amps run cleaner and harder. My CB really works well. My computer equipment no longer drains the system. All good.
Phaze, I hear ya, but here's what I meant.
I use dual deep cycle batteries. They are not yellow tops...but they are new.
My Powermaster charges at 14.8v. So, it charges at 14.8, so you are true that when I said 12v I could have been wrong. However, when the truck is immediatly turned off, the batteries sit at 13v. After a few hours of sitting, they drop even more voltage. So, that's what I meant.
That reply was like 4am, lol...I forgot I even posted. I came in here to put my .02 cents in and saw I had already posted!
