There is a new antenna on the market, called a Sky Thumper, here is what is said for it:
The SkyThumper 8.5K is constructed to take the punishment of the open road. Whether mounted to a big truck or automobile this antenna can take it! Features are 68" overall height, 9" shaft to get that coil up high and away from the vehicle body, stainless steel construction with chrome overlay, 25-30MHz Bandwidth, 7.2 DB Foreward Gain, 7" whip adjustment for SWR of 1.5 or less across the rated bandwidth, 17/7 stainless steel whip assures maximum power transfer.
We wanted an antenna that would talk. Thats the bottom line. This antenna is custom made to our specifications. This is NOT your typical truckstop coil antenna, or phony 'Oil Filled' junk. This is the real deal for the serious operator.
We have field tested these against the 2 leading trucker antennas (which are far more expensive) and the SkyThumper proved superior in transmit by 21% and receive by 26%. We are not allowed to mention names, but it's not hard to figure out what antennas these were.
This is a HEAVY ANTENNA, WEIGHING NEARLY 2.5 POUNDS. We recommend a heavy duty mount such as a 3 magnet 'Launch Pad' for magnetic applications, or a heavy duty mirror mount for big trucks. The SkyThumper8.5K has a standard 3/8" mounting stud that will screw into any commercially available mount.
We recommend RG/8X 95% Shield coax for applications up to 1,500 watts and RG-213 for higher power installations.
If you are looking for a BIG antenna to go with your BIG Radio, forget the mainstream stuff and give the SkyThumper 8.5K a try...You will NOT be sorry!
Can be bought at Sparkys, I might buy one and test it, this is just a thought
nice looking antenna,
curious to see if it is really's that much better than the other two "Leading Antenna"..lol 21% tx 26% rx is quit a bit...
but I like my 10K, very light weight, & does a good job..
Let us know if you try one out, and what you compared it to..
Without saying who the other antennas are made by, I call malarky.
If Wilson can say "Hey this is 50% better than a K40" I think they can say "This is 26% better than X"
That is a respectable gain antenna right there. How would I mount that to a car like mine? I know you can buy these really heavy duty trunk lip mounts with 4 set screws and a really wide lip... think that would do it?
Ya know, with all the joking about the BOZO radio and amps, I thought this was a joke ! Although I didnt see a pix or wright up on sparkys site, it is listed. not a bad price either.
I'm an empirical kind of guy, I need results! If this really works better than say a predator 10k yet costs less, I could see myself buying one. 9" shaft... hmmm... It wouldn't clear my car cab. Looks like this is a 1/4 wave antenna, correct?
The manufacturer wrote:...This is NOT your typical truck stop coil antenna...
I have issue with anyone comparing their product to anything sold at a truck stop. That stuff is junk, I could twist up a coat hanger and out perform any truck stop antenna.
