coax ?

Post by pangborn83 »

well I decided that I may as well upgrade to a better antenna and while I was at it I thought about co ax also (just got my general lee installed that I got from radio active). Well I got a new wilson 5000 trucker and contemplated the super mini 8 coax cable from wilson figureed why not cause it is a wilson antenna mine as well try one of their coaxs as well. My only question is can I use the regular coax jumper that I always used from my swr to radio or do I need something else? Still have everything in the packages and have not tried just thought I'd ask before I put it on and tried it incase it could harm anything, thanks, James

I have ran a different type of jumper than my coax it shouldnt hurt anything. but this my preference I always try to keep my jumper's and coax the same. when I order coax I order jumpers too to keep everything the same. Like I said this is my preference. there are some people I know that have 2 and 3 different jumpers inline all different types of coax and they get out just fine but it just dont look as good if everything is mixmatched in my opinion.

As long as it's 50ohm you should be fine. If it's RG58U, I'd probably consider upgrading to at least the RG8x or bigger...especially with your new radio. But if all you are doing is setting SWR's you should be fine.

okay time to show ignorance level here what did you say RG58U what do you mean is that the type of coax the wilson is all it says is "super" mini 8 coaxial cable. The guy at the radio shop at the TA I stopped at said in his oppinion it was a good coaxil about the best he had to offer. Thanks in advance, James
Also what it gives for details are
Vinyl boots to protect outside connections.
High quality BELDIN™ super low loss Mini 8 cable.
97% tinned copper shield for low loss of perfrormance and attenuation.
Tinned copper stranded center conductor.
Hand soldered PL-259's for long life and high performance.
Easy installation.
so how would one go about figureing what type of coax is what also everyone says no ? is dumb one but here is the exception to the rule

Super 8 would be a trade name wilson is using. There are standard sizing for coax cable. RG58U is a smaller cable, RG8X has a larger core ( More power, less resistance ) better insulation etc. Look at some of our sponsors web sites for cable and see what they carry and what they have to say about it.

I run

RG-8x Belden Cable with Amphenol PL259 Connectors

3000 Watt Power Handling

Stranded Copper Center Conductor

Not Regular Copper Shield But 98% Silver Tinned Copper Shield

Not Regular Gray Jacket But Heavy Duty Super Flex Clear Jacket

Cant tell you if its a great cable or not but seams to work great for me. Thats all that really matters I guess.

If your not sure which coax you have...in most case's, it's printed right on the side of the coax!....May need a pair of glass's to read it thou.
