That's scary.

My suspicion, is that those authorities have a poorly designed, or very cheap system.

Now I'm even less interested in HAM equipment.

Is this a recent happening ? It would seam strange that a handheld unit could in any way effect the PD's redio system even if they had a poor system. I mean, is the PD next to the walmart ? Dang, whats he got, a SuperWackPacked linear boosted hand held ?

How? What specifically can someone listening have to do with your TX/RX? Easy. Nothing...absolutely nothing. That'd be like saying DX rolls because the earth turns. It absolutely has nothing to do with it.

It always bothers me alot when misinformation and/or distortion of the truth is used to further someone's agenda. The biggest problem I can see is that the majority of folks would believe this statement as factual. Erroding one more bite of our freedom and liberty. For some reason "contempt prior to investigation" comes to my mind. Meaning that 99.999% of all folks who would see this story (average public citizens / non-radio informed) would believe that law enforcement has/had a legal right to sieze by force his property and detain him. How does one fight the majority when most don't know the facts?

Once you start looking into some of the details, you can tell some things aren't quite right.

I was a business acquaintance of a guy who did commercial, police, and data comm work. I also worked fairly close with a government agency with close ties to the police department, fire dept, and civil defense communications.

I learned from him, that just because they are a government agency, doesn't mean that they don't do stupid stuff with radios, and radio systems. They have bad systems, bad techs, broken equipment, wrong antennas too!

I just feel sorry for this poor guy that they have badges and guns.

I also have learned, that when I know the facts of a story, and then read the report in the paper, there is usually mistakes.

Hypothetical: I could see that if I was responsible for the police communications system, and I had it so screwed up, that a Walkie talkie in Wal-Mart was keying my repeater, I would try to hype up a story to get the heat off of me!

I just hope the American Justice System works out the kinks here.

What I find so interesting is that the propety the PD seized was his equipment to communicate for the rescue squad he was in, which I assume the PD or sherrifs office as some oversight. And he was on call the first night they inspected his radio at the Wal-Mart. I'm no expert, but it sounds like the equivalent of the pd serving a warrant on the fire dept because their radio's were on the same band in case of emergencies.

BTW: I used to work at several Wal-Marts and most of them use off the shelf FMRS type walkie talkies. Nothing special about them. I guess we had better ban their use before we all get arrested.

That's the way the media usually is.

It's known as literary license. The story will be manipulated for maximum appeal to the reader. Some times you get the whole truth, sometimes only the parts that the writer believes will get the best press.

This is absolute horse DUNN. Anyone with a motorola handheld [friend of mine has a box of them] can program the radio to receive AND transmit on trunking fire and PD frequencies. Does that mean that everyone with a motorola radio is a criminal?

Another thing, how would LISTENING to a scanner mess with the PD repeaters? That's like saying watching VHF TV will interfere with the local TV station.

X 2! Likely I'd never had heard about if you hadn't have posted it. Kinda' opens the eyes to what goes through folks' head. I too need a shot of reality from time to time.

Jon, I am glad you posted this. The situation those folks are in stinks, no doubt ! This relates to our hobby and brings about discussion relating to that which is good. I think the flavor of the discussion was positive and we all learned something we may not have known. We have to keep posting news like this to be informed and prepared for other things that may come.
