98vhp and ssb???
Hello I have a Galaxy 98vhp and am very interested in ssb I would have got the RCI 2970 but I am a knobs and switches guy (rather than a push button guy) and I just liked the 98vhp talked ssb localy for the first time today while at work. I dont have ssb in personal vehichle. so I can only play while sitting in the dump truck and the other guy sounded great and he said I sounded like I was in his drive way (we were only like 6 or 7 miles out) I just wondered if this radio I invested in is gonna be a good starter radio for ssb?? cause I think I'm gonna like it. Thanks Wrong Way

The 2970 will have great SSB audio...but no so good AM audio. Whereas the Galaxy will have great AM and okay SSB. So, you have to figure out which mode you'll be doing most. If it's AM, then stick with what you have. It will work fine on SSB for the times that you'll use it.

Re: 98vhp and ssb???
If you receive good audio reports with it on SSB, then I'd say stick with it. There doesn't seem to be a radio that does all modes GREAT. Some are better on AM, others are better on SSB....and there are some that sound adequate on both, just not great.

Re: 98vhp and ssb???
IF the radio is set up properly the 98vhp is a GREAT radio for SSB - every bit as good as the 2970 - and it will talk circles around the 2970 on AM. Too many people are stuck in the past about Galaxy 10m radios being 'drifters' and not very good SSB rigs. Those days are long gone. It's obvious that the people that are still in that frame of mind have not/do not own a newer Galaxy 10m radio or they wouldn't be posting (mis)information about them. Either that or whoever set their radio up didn't know what they were doing...

the rci 3900 hp is loud on am and loud and clear on ssb no drift this radio is stable on ssb 65 watts after do your work and for 200.00 dollars you can plug a frecuency counter on the back this is the best buy my 2 cents

Re: 98vhp and ssb???
I know this is a old thread but I don't understand how people say that the 2950's and 70's don't do that well on AM. I have a 2950 (non dx) that has a turbo echo and talk back, that in mine and many others opinion sounds great on AM as well as SSB. I also had a Galaxy DX99V that most people couldn't tell the difference between it and the 2950. I know that there is a lot of radio's that have a lot of punch on AM but I really don't think the 2950 and 70 is getting a fair shake. I also have a Magnum S-980 that is a screamer on AM and aint got nothing but flowers on SSB but, I believe a properly tuned 2970N2 will stomp it's **Censored** on AM and SSB.
