What would be a good external speaker to use in my pickup with my SWP General Lee? Does it matter how many watts the speaker can handle?

Motorola amplified speaker. You can't get any louder. I hooked mine to the line in on my stereo, and man it's loud.

I have found that the speakers with the higher watt capacity aways sound better...I have had good luck with the uniden esp20 Speaker but I just ordered some RCI speakers from RA, he says the rci speaker is a real good speaker .....I guess when I get it I will compare the 2 to see how big of a difference there is

I'm curious about Heavy Duty's speaker test too.
Edited in 4/19/06: Oops, mine is actually the smaller ESP-12, and I am still very happy with it. It's listed everywhere for $15, but I was robbed, I paid $20 at a shop in Pensacola, Florida
Like him, I am also happy with the Uniden Bearcat ESP-20 ($20.00). It sounds nice, it has a smooth sounding polypropylene speaker, and it takes full volume from the General Lee just fine, but my ears are quick to surrender.
I have mine firing into the back of my cloth truck seat, and that allows me to run the variable talkback wide open. If I turn it any other direction, I have to turn the variable talkback down to 75% or less.
50% volume usually does well for me. 75% volume if the windows are down on at highway speeds, but I think that is above safe sound levels for hearing damage.

I would like to add a speaker because the amp on the 4600 leaves little room for a speaker and whats on there is small. But there just aint no more room for an exteranl speaker.
I need a bigger truck!

Hey small truck as soon as I receive them I will start a thread and let you know how the comparison goes.....I should have one of them coming this week with my 99V

I'd like to hear the comparison as well before I buy one. I just need one in the truck because once those windows open in the warm weather, I need to crank up the volume on the general lee. I guess its because its a small speaker, but its really hard to understand what people are saying. I just figure that the external speaker would solve my problem.

Phaze, either speaker should be a big improvement. Is an extension speaker under the seat an option? Firing forward, or toward the driver door has worked pretty well for me before. Perhaps under the dash firing down?
Option 2: Get a tour bus! That would give even more meaning to the whole "ROLLING BASE STATION-TOWER OF POWER" Concept!
BobOstro, even the best extension speaker will not be able to fix all the bad sounding radios out there, but it opens up a lot of great options. I actually like to re-direct the extension speaker with different moods, and situations like windows down or up, talkback on or off etc. Firing it toward an indirect surface allows for higher volume, and it takes the harshness out of the noisy transmissions.
HeavyDuty, I'm looking forward to the test. I kinda hope that they test close, because if the RCI / Texas Ranger Speaker tests better, I'll have to buy one!

I don't think its as much the bad sounding radios as it is the high treble tinny sound that comes out of my General Lee. Who knows, it might just me my bad ears (on my head, not my radio). I just thought an external speaker might add a little base tone to the sound.

I have always found that a good external speaker will change the tone...so i know what you are saying bob

The tinny sound is the paper speaker on the General Lee's sheet metal. You will love the external speaker idea!

Well I recieved my RCI External Speakers today and all I can Say is WOW ...From the looks and feel of the RCI Speaker it is going to be one nice speaker.....They feel solid and look sharp, I am going to go install a few of them today ( External Speakers for a few Fire Trucks) and I will let you all know how they sound..There is not a doubt in my little mind that it is going to be better than the Uniden ESP-20.......but I will compare to see
