Sound effect when keying up mic.
Hi there! I've been a registered lurker for a few weeks now. Learned all kinds of neat stuff thanks to this site. About a month ago I installed a cobra 18ultra + mag mount antenna in my truck. About a week ago I installed a 102" SS whip from radio shack, after reading about them here. I purchased the ball mount, spring, coax and swr meter from a forum sponsor. Had no idea what swr's were before reading here. I think my next investment is going to be a new radio, got my eye on the 78ltw. Gonna give the 18ultra to a buddy.
I have been monitoring a channel that locals hang out on. Usually the same guys every day. Every now and then a guy with a mobile unit gets on. When he first keys up his mic it makes a pretty neat noise. The best way I can describe the noise its almost like the nois televisions used to make when you turned them on or off. I hopped on the channel and asked. Never got a straight answer, just some smart remarks hahaha. Any way if anyone has any idea how he's creating this noise I'd like to know. Thanks again for all the info and help I've already received.

I don't think so. Ill try to find sample audio but the description sounds off. Its difficult for me to describe the sound because I'm not sure where it originated. If I catch him on there again and he's coming in clear, ill try to record it on my cell phone.

not to hijack the thread but...
i listen to the police scanner once in a great while. i notice more than half the moble units when they key the mike you hear a clicking noise. anyone notice it? is it supposed to make that noise or is it something inside the mic physically moving I.E. a loose screw allowing parts to rub together.

D104, loosen a screw on the back of the mic, wrap a large paper clip around it and set it so the vertical mic button (the one on the stem) barely strikes it when you key it = PING.
D104, take the cousins out of the horizontal key of the mic (the one on the base) slap it hard when you key up = BAM! I'm broadcasting live ect.

I know this is a very old post I am replying to, but I thought I'd throw in a plug for my website.

Sometimes a noise toy is useful if there is a lot of background noise, but your local guys may get tired of hearing your noise every time you try to talk so use it wisely.
