Wiring an Astatic 611L

#321584

Post by gunner57 »

I just bought an Astatic 611L. It comes with a 5 wire cord and I have no idea how to wire it for my CB. I have tried searching google but have had no luck. Anyone out there able to help tell me what wire goes where, or at least show me where to get the info?

Hi gunner57,
Your mic should have 6 wires, 3 control, 1 audio, and 2 shields. What are the colors of the wires? What radio are you wiring it to? With that info I can give it a shot.

I know the 636L has 6 wires. This one only has 5 wires. There colors are:

1 bare/no insulation
1 green
1 red
1 white
1 black

I am either going to use it on my Galaxy 929 or my Cobra 29 series, most likely it will go on the Galaxy. Either one should wire the same. I have interchanged mics the two radios before.

Code from the old Astatic mic wiring book for the Cobra code (same as Galaxy) is:

1-shield & blue switch wire
2-white-audio
3-red-TX
4-black-RX

Therefore I'd say they all match except for the green wire. I'm guessing it's a switching wire like the blue wire in the traditional CB mics. Therefore I'd try the green with the shield on number one pin and if you have problems try it without the green wire.

When I "Googled" the 611L, it states;

Transducer - Dynamic
Polar Pattern - Omnidirectional
Frequency Response - 100Hz to 75Hz
Dynamic Range (Typical) - Not Specified By Manufacturer
Signal-to-Noise Ratio - Not Specified By Manufacturer
Maximum Input Sound Level - Not Specified By Manufacturer
Power Requirements - None, Dynamic
Output Impedance - 400 ohms, matches 150 to 1000 ohms
Output Connectors - Four-conductor, two-shield
Pad - No
Low Frequency Roll-Off - No
Dimensions (WxHxD) - 2.96 x 3.93 x 2.15" (75.4 x 100 x 54.8mm)
Weight - 227 g (8 oz)

The mic is designed for Public Address Systems. I would wire it the way Nagant posted, the green must be the second ground. The only way to tell is to open the mic and check the wiring on the switch.

I am lost with this mic stuff. I have two questions.
1. Is what you called the shield & blue wire the bare uninsulated wire?
2. If the green is a second ground, do I solder it to the same post as the other ground, or just leave it loose. I am assuming that I solder it with the other one, but I have to ask.

I know the mic isn't a CB mic, but it advertised multiple funtion from PA to radio. I don't really need a NC mic for the truck I plan on using it in, nor do I need a power mic. I hope that the sound quality is as good as I expect it to be.

Yes the shield is the bare wire and yes we are assuming the green wire is the second ground. Therefore try soldering it to the bare wire on pin 1. If the mic doesn't work correctly then unhook the green wire and leave the rest the same and try it that way.

Ok, I looked at the schematic that came with the mic and it didn't make much sense to me where the wires connected to the switch. I opened up the mic as well to look at it and compare it to my stock mic (ranger made for Galaxy). I think it confused me further. Here is what I saw on the 611L. The red wire and the green wire come out of the cord and each connect to their own separate post on the PTT switch. The white wire comes out of the cord and attaches to a post on the switch. Coming from a separate post is a white wire to the cartridge. Coming off the cartride and into the cord (or from the cord to the cartrige) is the black wire. The bare wire isn't visible at all in the mic. On the other end of the cord (where the 4 pin connector goes) the bare wire is surrounding the black wire.

If I have made this too confusing, I can scan the schematic and attach it.

The Astatic 611L will work with a radio if it has relay switching or needs just one wire switched to ground as is.
If the radio has electronic switching like the Galaxy Cobra etc that alternates switching two wires to ground between receive and transmit it will have to be modified.

Referring to your schematic the PTT switch in the mic will have to modified by moving the Green Wire on the PTT switch from the center post on the switch to the post directly to the left of it shown in the schematic diagram below where it says ON -->

Connect the Black and the Bare(which is the shield)wires together.

For the next step refer to the schematic for Optional Shorting the optional shorting wire will be used the exception will be that that wire will run from the black wire going to the mic element and to the post on the switch that the Green Wire was removed from instead of the post on the switch next to the White Wire.

The wiring to the mic plug for a Galaxy will then be

1.Bare (shield) and Black

2.White

3.Red

4.Green

I re-soldered the mic and it worked but backwards. Whe I turned on the radio it was like I was keying the mic only the PTT button was not depressed. When I pushed the PTT button it was like releasing the PTT button, and I would hear the static and or other conversatios. I know this is as simple as switching two of the wires on the switch, but I don't know which ones.

if you don't know which wires to reverse on the ptt switch in the mic a simpler way to do it is to reverse the wires going to pin 3 and 4 on the mic plug.

I swapped the green and red wires on the switch and the microphone is working as it should. I looked and looked online for instuctions how to hook it up and found nothing. I even emailed Astatic/CAD tech support to find out what wire goes where. They didn't even respond. I am really glad CBRT exists. There seems to always be someone who knows how to get it done on here. Thanks for your help Night Crawler.
