Comparison:Antron 99, IMAX 2000

Pricewise it's pretty close...the IMAX handles more watts...is the price difference worth it...and just to get discussion going...how does the Predator base antenna stack up against these...and what is it's price?

How hard is the "one hour" assembly of the Predator?

Price comparison--->

Antron 99
$75 Bells
$60 Clays
$30 E-bay & 21.75 shipping
$50 CSV Electronics $16.70 shipping and ins. (a like new used one)
$65 Walcotts
$70 Universal Radio
$60 Bobs CB
$90 Radio Pro Shop
$65 1 Stop
$65 CB City
$60 GI Joe

I-Max 2000
$120 Bells
$90 Walcotts
$90 Clays
$90 Bobs CB
$120 Radio Pro Shop
$110 DX Electronics
$90 1 Stop
$95 CB City
$85 GI Joe

So Bells is high with $75 on a 99 and GI Joe is low with $85..is the $10-15 worth the upgrade to an IMax?

Thanks for any input.

I have never used an Imax but I do own a Antron A-99.

I bought the A-99 because I was told that the top section of the Imax was weak and could break off in high winds. With that info I bought on Ebay. I have not been disapointed in anyway by the performance of the A-99 and have made many DX contacts.

Note: you added shipping to the ebay listing but I believe most of the suppliers will add shipping to each of those prices.

I have heard a few (on the air as well) mention they could not tell any difference between the two's function. However, sometimes the proof comes when DX is rolling, too. And the funny thing is sometimes people will change things like not put them exactly the same height, same location, etc. So I would take that with a grain of salt.

I have owned the A99 (and still do) and it's worked pretty well. For the money it's a decent antenna. However, I plan on trying the IMax as the wavelength (according to the research I've done) is .64 vs. 1/2 on the A99.

So personally I think both should be a decent performer provided you get it in the air some.

I have owned both and both are good antennas, in high winds the A99 will hold up better, I think you would be happy with both,,,but for the difference in cost I would buy an A99,,,I used an A99 and talk skip all the time on it, I replaced my IMAX with the A99,,,one thing to think about when you order an A99,,,you won't have to pay oversize shipping on that antenna even though most dealers charge an oversize,,,shipped my son one last week,,,and the post office measured the package and it wasn't oversize,,,CAUTION, try to buy from a sponsor here on the forum like Sparky's CB Shack, Radioactive Radios, GIjoes ect.....stay away from alot of shops, as they will charge an oversize,,,just my 2 cents

I remember Al from Sparky's posting a while back that the A99 is 1/2 inch (or close to it) within the limits of normal shipping via USPS. So no oversized shipping charges as long as it is shipped through the Postal Service.

not to muddy the waters but I just read that there is an Anttron..305 that had radials...let me quote from a webpage...
Anttron 305 Super Base Antenna
Everyone is familiar with the A-99, formerly called the Antron 99. Well, the original partners split up and the Antron name can no longer be used by Solarcon. You'll notice that the Anttron people have added another "t" to the name. Some of you might have been around long enough to have seen or heard about the partner split up at Browning Laboratory. It brought the birth of Tram. Instead of one ultimate radio, we were blessed with two Rolls Royce of radios. Each one would try to out do the other with their next model. It gave us some wonderful radios back in the old days. Something good came from the Browning split, and something good has been coming from the Antron split. Anttron has made -the highest quality low cost fiberglass whip antennas for a long time. I was never afraid to recommend them to truckers looking for something that wouldn't break their wallet. They also manufacture the 21K high power mobile antenna. It handles over 20,000 Watts of power.

I haven't tested the 305 yet but I've seen the one that will be going up at my store in Everett. The base section is heavier than the A-99. The quality seems to be much better too. The antenna comes with two U- clamps for mounting to a standard size mast. The KEMTRON™ radials are approximately 6 inches long and made of aluminum.
Anyone shed light, a comment or the Gospel about this...I had never heard of this antenna.

Also this just IN, yesterday I received the top section of 35-30-0005-00 Replacement Tip Whip

Replacement antenna tip whip for Shakespeare Style 176-1.

Price: $35.95

So I have a marine/base antenna...lol For that price I figured to try it...it arrived in like 2 days from South Carolina by UPS...nice box :)

Any ideas to mounting it on the garage...I soldered on a PL already to some good length of coax (only one was missing)

I guess a couple lengths of pole to get it past the peak of my garqage, as it has a tall roof because of a dormer room I have. Here's a peak at a gable end during construction and YES it now has a peak and NO we don't still have snow....it went away last week!
