DX Talking - Big key or Big swing?
Posting this in the "TALKING DX" category because it pertains DIRECTLY to talking DX:
Just thought i'd throw this one out here for everyones opinions and comments. In the land of DX, there's been a long going argument about what is best for DX talking, to have a small dead key and big swing, or maul your box with a high dead key and small swing.
I've been doing some experimenting with my mobile, and still am undecided on the results for myself. I find that depending on the conditions, it varys on the way my radio is heard best when I key up on the bowls to talk skip. Sometimes the big maul gets my numbers called most, while other times that small key and 5k swing seems to punch on through.
I've been running for a week or two now with the small key/big swing setup, and am changing over today to a maul type setting to see what kind of results I get for the next couple of weeks.
I'd be very interested to hear some other peoples results if you'd like to experiment yourselves, as well as your past results for those who have already been experimenting with these settings.
Come on! Throw the numbers out there, roll the watergates, and let's see and hear what you can do!
Which one are you? "MAUL DROPPER" or "SWING THAT THING"?
Gotta talk to my radioooooo... it's the rule of the SuperBowl!
521 gettin up, and I just got allllll the way down!

I'm gonna ask some of you more experianced radio guys if you would have different results for different amounts of power? 521 runs 5k watts and his results may be different than say someone with less or more than that. That's what I'm guessing. But I'm still sorta new to all this so if somebody wants to help me out a little bit, I would greatly appreciate it.
I hope that made sense...

Here's the result of my first key on the Superbowl channel 6, after dialing my radio up to a 2200 Bird watt AVG dead key- Yelled for a radio check and got answered by three big bowl operators within minutes! Cool Breeze, then Johnny Cochran, then Big Daddy..... Georgia stations. I was in my mobile about 15 miles east of downtown Houston, Texas.Rex_foxhound wrote:I'm gonna ask some of you more experianced radio guys if you would have different results for different amounts of power?

I've for years had small key to big swing,,but I have modified some radios to maintian the peck of swing longer, and have talked more skip with less watts that way,,debate will always be there I guess, I talk from Ohio to Texas, to Canada on a 1 pill amp with my setup,,,I talk all over the U.S.A. out of my mobile with a 2 pill amp,,but my radio keys about 2 watts and swings to little over 40 watts, I also use a speech processor in some of my radios,,,low key with big swing, I think the audio is louder,,,just my thoughts in this
That was my main thoughts in throwing this thread up here. I usually do the low key and big swing on mine too, but hardly get noticed on the Superbowl running like that, even with a 5K peak. I'm going to run my amps set with the 2200 watt key for a week or so and see what the results are. So far, the big key got me noticed right away. What I was told is the swing is great for keydowns, but on the Bowl, you need that big carrier to keep that signal in there.BigBopper wrote:low key with big swing, I think the audio is louder,,,just my thoughts in this
