Base tuned for astatic 636L?
Have a Texas Ranger TR696F-SSB Base station I bought used. Has extra channels and was told it was tuned for an astatic 636L noise canceling mike. I'm trying to use a D104 silver Eagle and getting mixed modulation reviews. Is it the way the radio has been adjusted or do you think I just don't have the D104 tuned right. I've had the mic turned up a 1/4 turn and the mike gain on the radio at about 5-6. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks: Tin Knocker.

Turn the gain pot on the D-104 all the way counter clockwise, then clockwise just a touch, now use your radios Mic Gain as Bombero suggested.

Good luck and enjoy.

Re: Base tuned for astatic 636L?
Have a friend with a radio make a video of you transmitting yours. When you transmit, make it known each adjustment you make on the mic and radio (i.e. say this is radio's mic gain at the __o'clock position and gain pot on the mic is at the __o'clock position "test, test, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, audio, audio, audio, etc".) Keep trying different settings and transmit repeating the same phrase at each setting. Play back the video for yourself so you can hear how you sound on your radio. Put the radio to where it was set when you think you sounded the best. Every mic and radio combination and setting will sound different depending on the person transmitting. What sounds the best with my voice may not sound the best with your voice. So it is important that you that set your radio to your own voice.

Re: Base tuned for astatic 636L?
just about every radio I use a D104 on I just barely turn the pot up on the mic and have to run the mic gain on the radio at about 12 oclock due to so much modulation. on the D104 I mean very low about 1/8 of a turn is all that is needed. I tried one on a radio that did not have a mic gain and I just about could not get it turned down low enough.

Only radio I ever had that I couldnt run a D104 on was a radio that had the modulation limiter cut. If thats been done to your radio you will most likely never get the D104 to sound good. Once I had it fixed and tuned right the D104 worked well on it.
