When i bought my Lee, there was a Ranger noise cancelling mic in the box. How good are these mics compared to the Astatic 636L?

I think they are constructed well, as good as the 636L, on some radios they sound better. Use the "Advanced Search" and read all the opinions about them.

That's the SRA 198 NC Mic that comes stock now with the General Lee's and some other radios. It's a very good Mic, and much better at NC than the 636 or RK- 56...

They got a bad rap when they first came out about 3 years ago for sounding muffled, but after getting complaints from everyone who bought one, Ranger went in and added a resister and other parts to the Mic to take care of the muffled sound...Now they are probably one of the best hand-held noise cancelling Mic's on the market...

If you were to replace it with a Astatic 636L, you would be going backwards trying to improve on your audio IMO.

This is a post from a well known CB Shop, and is spot-on:
Simply The BEST Audio quality hand Held Mic on The market !
Better TRUE audio reproduction then ANY Noise canceling Mic,
and better then ALL Power mics except the cr577…
Technical Specifications speak for themselves, these babies reproduce 50-15,000 Hz
No other noise canceling mic comes close to The LOUD clear reproduction of You !!
No Astatic, No Cobra, NO Wilson, NO Road King.
Solid comfortable feel in your hand,
This is a True Truckers Microphone !!
50-15,000Hz
2. Sensitivity : -74dB±3dB / -72db±3dB
3. Rated output impedance : 600Ù
4. Weight : 0.25kg
5. Curve Cable : 1.88M 6ö +
Still not convinced? This is what CB Magazine had to say about the Mic:

I am just glad to hear that the radios come with something other than that Cobra knockoff mic, they are junk and break within a month.

And this forum strikes again... I read this particular topic and was forced by my subconscience to order a new Ranger SRA 198... I currently use a 636 and am looking forward to seeing the difference in mics :icon_e_geek:

It never hurts to have a backup in the desk drawer, you may pick up a nice radio without a mic.

I bought one a few months ago to use in the truck and love it. An added bonus to how well it performs is how it feels. It fits great in your hand and has a weight inside so you don't feel as if your holding a toy like most mics these days. I'm thinking about buying more while they're still under $30.

I bought my SRA 198 @ Amazon for $15.99 plus shipping. Recieve it in 3 days, took it apart and checked it and compare the parts inside of it to a post on here. It was all Genuine. Best money I ever spent. I still love my old Turner 56.

ALL UNITS PREPARE TO COPY 1-ADAM-12 FOR THIS RANGER UPDATE!!!!

Received my 198 in the mail today. Tested it on my RCI 2980 against my current 636 and WOW! I love this mic! It is definitely louder than the 636...not by a house but substantial. Its heavy and the PTT switch engages very well. Cancels the background noise (clothes dryer and dehumidifier in basement). 5 stars

...and just had to order another one to replace my 636 in the mobile...

I purchased 3 SRA 198 mics... They worked fantastic on my Ranger 2995dx base!
Matter fact that's what I run on that radio now. Clean clear signal!

BUT I could not get them to work on my Uniden Grant, Washington, Cobra 142 base... (mod limiters removed)-(Mic gain all the way up..)
They sound clean but Mod is so so low people have trouble hearing you... They just do not match up or whatever...

I have very limited experience w/ mic's but I really like the Ranger that came w/ my General Lee. It was one of my favorite things about the radio when I got it. It seems to be a well made and solid mic. Hopefully it will hold up over time. If not $21 shipped for a new isn't bad.....as long as they don't burn out every few months.
3-1-6 out in the stix......

I just got one of these mics as well and I did some audio recordings comparing different mics from the base and from the mobil, The SRA 198 is the better sounding mic with my voice on both radios! Mics tested were, Astatic 636, RK 56, SRA 198, SRA 158(stock with the 2995) and the stock Stryker mic.
This was the first time I had ever recorded myself talking talking from one radio to another and I was kinda surprised at how I sounded on the receiving radio. It turned out to be one of the better experiments I have done, making notes for myself to set mic gain for each mic to get the clearest cleanest sound out of each mic.

And it was a lot of fun to!
