trying to talk skip on 7, but heard on 19, distorted

A few days ago while sitting in a truckstop, i was listening to skip on several channels. I decided to see if anyone could hear me on AM 7. Another guy came in faintly and asked where i was, then told me my radio sounded like total crap and making his needle move backwards. Turns out, he was across the parking lot and heard me coming thru channel 19 and responded to me. Once i went to 19, he told me my radio sounded great.
What would cause this, and is it normal? I know "big radios" splash, but i'm barefoot.
