SRA-198 mic issue with Galaxy 48T

#369940

Post by dnguillory »

Hey guys,
Thank you all for help on previous posts. Very informative answers to my questions that work.
I have a new issue. I have a Galaxy DX-48T. Works awesome. Got a SRA-198 which I've used and like on previous radios. When I use it, while its hanging and swinging a little from moving in the truck, the cord gets closer to radio and I get an increase in pink noise. Moved it away, and it helped. However, when I grab it to talk, pink noise increases. When I hold it while in a conversation in receive mode, pink noise increases enough to effect what I hear from the other talker.
That maybe it's radio but when my 636L mic is plugged in, no problems.
I stopped in at cb shop and tried a new in box SRA-198 and it did the same thing. I asked the guy to swap cords from my astatic 636L, and he didn't want to mess with it.
I love the ranger mic and need to be able to use it, but I can't due to this issue. Are there any thoughts or suggestions as to what is causing this and what I can do about it?

I wouldn't think that the cord on the SRA-198 would go bad, they are pretty decent and the retainer in the mic itself is decent so most problems are the plug, it might have pulled.
I wired up a Astatic mobile mic and when plugged into the radio caused a alternator whine, checked fine on my meter but not on the radio, took the plug apart and coated the solder lugs with liquid electric tape and solved the problem, still haven't a clue what was touching but had to be in the plug.

That is weird. Wildly guessing, it sounds ground related to me. I think here could be something unique with the sra198 like the actual cord length or in the head that makes it a good noise source. Maybe some better internal mic grounding? I wonder if you added a tuned counterpoise to the radio case (9 ft or so of insulated wire attached to the radio case) it would act as an rf absorber. I read that they have a weight on the inside. Could it be the culprit? I'm still waiting on my royalty check on those. I'm all over this sight and on youtube for years then they come out with it and out of all numbers it ends up being "198"????? :)

Might want to try a ground to the chassis of the radio and a ferrite choke on the mic.

And make sure all your coax connections are tight and that the ground for your radio is good. Not a cig lighter plug either. A good ground to frame.

radio ground is straight to battery and I ran a wire from radio chassis screw to a body ground. need to find and try a ferrite choke.

Radio shack most likely still has them. Get one that fits snug or that you can make a wrap around. Good luck and hope you get it solved. And ferrite chokes are available on the flea bay as well.

That was nice of the guy to swap them out, a good way of doing business, you'll probably stop by and buy something from him on a regular basis.
