Using Multiple Linear Amplifiers

#390099

Post by Deleted User 30222 »

I've been planning on buying a KL-503. But after reading some posts here on multiple amps, i'm having second thoughts. So if i'm going to be running a second amp down the road. Would it not be better to start off with the KL-203P :?: Using that to drive a bigger one. Any recommendations

You definitely need to get the KL-203P if your gonna get any.
That one works on Sideband. The 203 doesn't.

Fer sure, that's the one i meant. Made the correction. But that's what i thought, need the smaller one to drive a bigger one. I know Bozo mentioned he uses a 2 pill to run his 8 pill. And if i'm not mistaken, the number of pill's refers to the number of transistors.

yes. pills= transistors when your talking on using a "driver" you need to find out how much drive the amp will take. unless its a six pill or greater .I doubt you would need a driver.

I hope to have a 6 or 8 pill some day. Right now trying to figure the difference between the KL203p and KL503. That is how many pill is each one. Guessing the KL203 is most likely a 2 pill, not sure about the KL503. And right now the 203p is on sale for $69 :icon_e_surprised:

Those amps use something called mosfet transistors. The dont call those pills because they look like the finals in your radio radio and im not to sure how they are power rated .except what they say when you buy them

BJT is a Bipolar Junction Transistor, while MOSFET is a Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor. 2. A BJT has an emitter, collector and base, while a MOSFET has a gate, source and drain. ... BJTs are preferred for low current applications, while MOSFETs are for high power functions

This is what i got off the net

I m,know the rm italys 203 you dont want to put more than four watts in or they might burn up. I used to think 2 pill amps were the same way but ive seen some take alot more . I guess its all on how they are originally set up

I guess i just looking to know what amp is best for using down the road to power a bigger amp. So if the KL203P is 2 pill, that seems like a good starter. And i can always switch that to my 29ltd and then get the KL503 and use that with my DX959

The 503 specs list 250W output with 450W Max on ssb.
The 203P spec list 100W with 200W Max on ssb.

Mike

So the KL503 would be to much to drive a 8 pill :?:

Okay this is just my opinion. The KL203P would be a good little driver amp when "set up right", minimal output (less than 100w) would be great for the new transistorized or tube ham amplifiers and the keying circuit can be tapped to key the bigger amp. Now if your not planing to run the big amp all the time or thing just aren't the best they can be (ie: antenna, coax, etc.) than I would suggest the KL503, it will take slightly more abuse then the 203, plus don't forget it has power settings, on "1" or "low" it only puts out 50 to 100W. Like I said JMO.

With those Rm amps, if you drine them just a little to hard, they blow up.
I drive my X Force 4 pill with a Stryker 955. It will dead key from 4 to 20 watts and swing to 80 pep.
The amp is a competition base with a 150 amp power supply that runs at 21 volts. It was fried when I got it free.?i replaced the transistors with tishiba red soft and everything inside with high quality parts at a cost of about $ 200.
If I tell you what this box Peak output is, you won’t believe me. Working great for 2?years now. I drive my 8 pill with a Galaxy hp98, it peaks almost 200, with midgets. That both draw so many amps I never use them.
