Ranger SRA198

I have a President Johnny III with the stock 6 pin mic. I purchased a Ranger SRA198 mic from a company online. The mic is sold normally as a 4 pin but I left a note in the comments to change the mic to a 6 pin for my Johnny III. My order was canceled because the company said the SRA198 could not be made to fit my radio. I realize I will lose the channel changing buttons on the 198 and I'm OK with that. The reason I am wanting the noise cancelling mic is because I installed the Johnny III in a soft top Jeep and the background noise is significant at highway speeds. Can anyone explain why the 198 can't be made to fit a 6 pin?

the 198 mic will work with the radio. you just have to figure out what 4 pins you need to use for the 198 mic. the 2 for the channel changing will not have wires going to the plug. just like the uniden 6 pin mics you can wire a 198 mic to them just do not use the 2 for the channel changing circuit. if you use them you can smoke your radio. I do not know what pins your radio uses for the tx and rx on your radio. it should be only 4 pins needed.

here is the service manual for you radio. looks like you will only use pins 1,2,3 and 5 to hook up the 198 mic to your radio. look at the schematic and you can see what pins go to the element and to ground.

Easiest fix...Buy a 6 pin to 4 pin adapter...There's a Mic adapter available for little over $6, usually with free shipping...I have one I use on my President McKinley which lets me use any Mic that is wired up for a 4 pin Cobra/Galaxy radio...

Look for ones that are wired for Uniden/Cobra/Galaxy radios...The Uniden Bearcat wireless Microphone will also work with your radio.

if the president Johnny is wired just like the uniden 6 pin radios I have already worked out the wiring.

Pin 1 – Modulation/ audio
Pin 2 - Rx
Pin 3 - Tx
Pin 4 - no voltage found radio on or off
Pin 5 – Common/ ground/ shield
Pin 6 - 7.88 volts + with radio on, 8.00 volts during Tx

980 pin out for Superstar mic:

1=white
2=red
3=yellew
5=ground/ shield

this is the color code I found for a superstar mic which is the same as a galaxy and connex stock mics.

When you change the plug on a mic for this kind of radio always double check your work, shorting pin 6 will fry the radio. Good luck.

UPDATE: I rewired the 198 for a 6 pin. It works great.
1- modulation/audio (yellow)
2-RX (green)
3-TX (red)
5-Shield (bare)

So the SRA-198 is not a very loud mic at all. on a lot of the newer radios ( if the radio is tuned to another mic)
I have read that if you remove the poldip cap it makes them a bit louder?
I prefer my Sl-41 mic over the sra-198 as it can be adjusted and has a jumper you can add if you need more bass tones in your voice depending on the radio you are using..
for the Home I use a Heil-Pr781 or the best mic ever made ... the Astatic 575 M-6
But I think the palomar sl-41 gets my vote for mobile noise canceling over the sra-198 for clarity and audio..
