Hey all,
I have several powered D104s and all of them are stock at this point. The D104s over the years have gotten scratchier and higher pitched. Bummer.... because you have to admit, these are cool looking mics!
I have read that this is common issue with these mics after all the years. I guess my old Turner Plus Three sounds better to others than the D104.
I have also read about people rebuilding them with different mic elements and modified boards. There are a few "kits" on Fleabag (auction site - non sponsored). Has anyone got experience in this area or had any luck? If so, which way did you go and how is the sound now?
Thanks in advance... 73s

The ones sold by w2eny on the auction site are well worth the money...I have two of them I installed on my D 104's and they sound great...They come with instructions and a small diode that you have to install on the bottom side of the D 104, which is no big deal to do.
Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.
Those kits on the auction site are great, best part is after you buy one you can mimic it for the rest of your mics. The one JJD recommended is probably the best to get, wish he would become a sponsor here.
One of the best things you can do is to change the crystal (or ceramic) mic element to a small electret element (2 lead type) and a 3800ohm 1/8w resistor on the solder side of the board (P100) to power it (I can PM you a pic of where it goes), I also change out the axial capacitor on the board (orange in color) to a higher voltage, same value (4.7uF). This will give it a bassier sound than the tinny crystal mic.
You can find the components at the more reputable electronic stores online.

He might be interested in being a sponsor if asked...I'm sure he wouldn't turn down a chance for some more advertising if the price was right, but ya never know...

Perfect... just what I needed to know.... thanks guys!
I will look into buying one of the w2eny units. It looks like they are $22.95 and $4 shipping.
Will be nice to use the D104 again...73's all around!

I have and he's not,, Bob said that his sales aren't enough to support a sponsorship.
