Cell tower causing antenna noise?

#401728

Post by jimbowilly »

Hi,
Seems since the cell tower went up a half mile from my house, I am no longer able to receive as well as I used to. Is there any way to block out the interference from cell towers?
Thanks,
jimbowilly

Honestly, a cell tower 1/2 mile away shouldn't affect your ability to receive signals at all. I'd check your antenna and coax.

I have checked the coax and antenna set up for continuity which is fine. The interference is the same no matter which of my radios I connect to my antenna. With so few cb radio operators now days, it's difficult to get someone to let you know the details of how well they are receiving me. All of the weekly cb club meet ups have ceased to exist. Just a SHTF form of communication anyway. Thanks for the reply

If you're getting some kind of noise all of a sudden, it's hard to say what might be causing it. Of course I don't know what kind of living situation you're in, be it rural, urban, etc. If you live in a dense population area with lots of neighbors it could be anything. I doubt it's the cell tower as it being 1/2 mile away and the fact that 800 MHZ is pretty far from 27 MHZ, it wouldn't be the first thing I would suspect. More likely something close by is causing the problem.

TNT is right about it not interfering with your receive or transmit. You might notice some noise coming from it. The switching power supplies used by the cell companies make noise and the aviation lights. Verizon installed one in the church's parking lot about 500ft from my antennas, didn't bother them and no noise.

I switched out radios, from a Cobra 29 LTD Black Chrome Super Tune (w/RFX75 install) to a Galaxy DX949 and I turned the squelch all the way off, turn the RF gain on all the way on, then dial back the RF gain control until almost all the noise disappeared." This seems the best solution I've found so far.

I was going to suggest to turn on the noise blanker and ANL if your radio has them.
