Seeking info on a RoadTalker40

I got my hands on a RoadTalker40 model number 934.38081700 and wanted to know if anyone knows the history of the radio/ its specs. When was this thing made? How much range does this thing have?

Any info would be great.

Welcome to CBRT.

From what I remember this radio was built and used in the ‘70’s.

It’s bulletproof and gets out good depending on any mods it might have..as well as the antenna setup you are utilizing.

The Roadtalker 934.38081700 is a 40 channel AM radio. Freq range 26.965-27.405 MHz

I've got a couple of them which were given to me a few years ago. Two things frustrate me about the Roadtalkers... firstly that there were so many different models of radios sold as "Sears Roadtalker 40" and to find the actual model you have you have to look for the number on the back, in this case 934.38081700. The second thing that frustrates me is the inability to find a schematic for these radios (or for one other Roadtalker 40, an AM-only slant face, model number 934.38110700).

They're old, but they work. I modified one of mine to be a propagation indicator in my shack, so it's on 24/7 usually monitoring Ch. 6. When I hear traffic on there I know the band is open. The other two I have stored away until I think of a use for them.

The range of the radio largely depends on your antenna. You can have the best radio in the world but if you have a crappy antenna you're not going to have much range. The cheapest radio will work far better on a good antenna than the best radio on a poor antenna.

Love the Sears Roadtalker. Easy to mod and work on. I think I have one in my radio stash somewhere. My fav was the SSB unit, I could coax 25 watts out of that thing, wish I still had it.

I bought a couple of the SSB units when Sears was getting rid of their CB stuff, it was around the time the radios changed to 40 channels, that was in 1977. They were good radios but did lack in adjacent channel rejection. You can use the “search” here to find more info on the radio.
