980ssb Rx/Tx
Hello everyone. Acquired yet another broken Bearcat 980. When keying up the radio am and ssb, it switches from Rx to Tx normal. But quickly switches back to Rx? Also will not hold a dead key(Am). When using the talkback I can hear about 1 second of great audio then quickly cuts out. So far replaced every capacitor, new driver and final. The three transistors held on the side of the radio held in place with clamp. Tried 6 mics, jumped the mic pins with screwdriver. Used volt meter on every test point, transistors everything imaginable. Hp frequency counter shows good frequency. I'm missing something for sure. Leaning toward bad IC/PLL. Not my first rodeo with radios and don't reach out unless INEED HELP. Lets talk

If I’m not mistaken, that radio has a SWR protection circuit that stops the radio from transmitting, would have to check it out in the menu, also check the diagnostics in the menu too.

when they work, they work, but i am no fan of the 980 as you may tell from my postings on them, my bet is your pll is malfunctioning and can only be replaced, i read about various problems with these and it kinda comes back to the same thing, i wish the factory would have tested these a little more before dumping them onto the market.

Thank you for the reply. I figure its the PLL. It's gonna make a great parts radio.
