Mods for a Cobra 29 LTD

#45624

Post by InADream »

Hey guys, I recently purchased a Cobra 29 LTD Classic... It has been peaked and tuned already, but i want to add a few mods into the radio... I want to try and add a few in while the radio is open instead of opening it 4 times or more... I was looking at a few mods and wanted every ones opinion on them... If there are some i don't mention Please feel free to add...

621-Preamp - Says it increases receive distance... Is that true or just crap? And how far does it increase?

621-Modulator Kit - It is a Variable Power Swing Kit... It says this kit increases your modulation to way over 100% while still remaining clear!!! Is that OK to be used on a already peaked and tuned radio... It says you can make your radio super swing, is that just tricking the radio or does it really work... I am also a little unclear on what it really does!!!

I am definitely going to be installing talk-back and an echo board... But if there is anymore mods please let Me know I love modding whatever i can...

Also please bear with me as i am still learning... Thanks

Swing kit, super swing kit. Hmmmmm. In the end you are still running a single final and will only put out around 15 watts and it wont "Swing" any more than that.

My personal opinion on talk back is " Where the heck it the off switch "

Talk back is suposed to be for "hearing" yourself to set your echo. Too many ppl leave it on all the time and transmit squeels and noises that they dont hear. Reality is that using the talkback wont realy let you hear what your radio sounds like. Best thing would be to have someone else on your radio while you listen on another so you can have your friend adjust it till you like what it sounds like. Mark your spot on the dial and leave it alone.

Talk back causes more problems than most ppl know.

Preamp. Well, a preamp increases the volumn of the recieve like a gain control. You can get the same effect by turning up your volumn. Having the radio professionaly aligned and tuned will work better.

If it sounds like its too good to be true, it usualy is. There are no miracle fixes or upgrades.

Thanks Guys, I ordered my cobra from sparky`s and he said that it would swing to around 30 watts... I am hoping that he is correct and not lying to me as that would be not good... Is there something he does to get more or does he upgrade the finals...

Does anyone know if the RX/TX LED light is the same as the LED light for the Meter...

Eastcoast told me he has also seen the29's do theses kinds of watts.
I personally have never seen it with my own eyes.
I have been having my 29 for approx 8 years and not a single problem.
It has always been a good radio for me.
Good Luck with yours!

I am hoping that it comes in around 25 watts... I am going to try and hookup to watt meter one day and see... I think I am going to go with the spark tune modulator from sparkys and screw the rest...

Anything else you can think of to totally trick it out let me know....

LEDS

You can get a blue LED in your meter. A blue channel indicators looks great too. You can get supermods, upper and lower channels and all kinds of goodies in it. Not too mention fancy knobs that can match your kewl blue lights. Then chrome covers. Dont forget to get a good astatic microphone. They last forever and sound great. You can get the mic chromed or in mormal configs. There is a ton you can do with that radio. The lights look great btw. Kinda like the magnum radio next to my name. Take care and enjoy the toy. Oh noise toys too, but they are only fun for a second. My opinion anyways. Ironfoof

my opinion

yes a cobra 29 will do some between 25 and 30 on peak fr split second more than like i am guessing your actually watt will be normally any where between 15 and 25 and u might once and while might u see it drop as low 10 watts and if was u the first thing i would get before anything else is d104. wif stock mic wattage will be lower and audio will not be any where as clear d104 i would say if my radio d104 first then echo board.

that just my 2 cents worth

second off if your modulation is over percent your just going to sound like trash and if u do not believe me ask sparky basically at that point u just got every small splatter box lol

Suggestion: Swing is the name of the game. You can get your Deadkey set to 2 watts & still swing to 25,30 watts. If you plan on running a Box (Amp), Get your Deadkey set to 2 Watts. otherwise you could burn up your amp.

yea you can get those watts out of a 29,,,the 621 modulation kit from eBay is a capacitor and 2 resistors in black shrink tubing,,,the Sparktune will let you adjust your dead key and allowing swing, these are the best I have used in years,,I just put a Sparktune in member Lil Reb's base radio, and man it became a monster,,,if you want a receive booster, here it is:
Receive Boost: Locate pin 14 of the PLL chip, and the Positive (+) side of C-12. Install a 22k-220k ohm resistor between these two points. The smaller the value, the more the receive is boosted. Use CARE when soldering to the PLL chip! If desired, this mod may be wired through a switch.

Hi all. My first post here so hello, break channel or whatever :D

On the cobra 29 Ltd, how low will the dead key go? Also Q for the 25 Ltd. I've been using a Galaxy 55 for a long time but I'm thinking about trying out one of these but I need a low dead key, about 3/8 watt, to run the box I have. Is this possible for a 29?

Thanks

Glad to be part of your forum
