Galaxy Saturn SSB receive

#411002

Post by Hawkei1967 »

Got a Saturn on my desk for a final replacement and fix SSB receive.

Replaced final. Radio now transmits great on all modes with about equal power on all modes (30w peak).

Realigned entire radio, all oscillators, VCO, buffers, RF Stage.

Realigned receive.

Outcome:
AM/FM receive is awesome. NB/ANL works as it should.

Transmit works great in all modes with no issues.

SSB receive low. The SSB receive isn't non existent, there is some receive, but no where near as good as AM/FM.

Replaced:
C43
C31
C32
C35
C40
C44
C90
C95
C89
C67
C133
C192
C190
TR17
TR18
TR14
TR15
TR12
TR20
TR21
TR22
TR50
TR51
TR52
D15
D16
D11
D25
D27
L13
L14

Checked ALL transistors (only one that's high is TR22, even after replacing, it was high when I started and it's still high), all check fine within a few volts here and there.

TR22
B - 2.59
C - 7.74
E - 1.78

TR52, C190, C193 get scorching hot within seconds of flipping to SSB and just receiving.

Checked ALL IC's, all are within a few volts here and there.

Still AM/FM receive is way better than SSB.

FNRISI 100MHz scope.

Agilent 4411B Spectrum analyzer.

Fluke bench frequency counter.

FY6800 signal generator, porting channel 2 with 1k tone over to channel 1 which is set for 27.205MHz then using MOD button to selection modulation type and amplitide.

ESR Meter.
Capacitor meter.
Fluke digital volt/ohm meter
TC1 component tester.

Repaired many radios, but this one has gotten the best of me.

Any suggestions on getting sideband receive up more?

Again, transmit in all modes is great, AM/FM receive is awesome, SSB receive weak. If a local station keys up on sideband (either one) and let's off the key, then the SSB receive on this one takes about 1.5 seconds to recover, AM/FM doesn't do this, they recover immediately. Everything else works great as it should.
