My New Battery
My New Battery
I put a new battery in my truck yesterday. As some of you know already I do not like Optima Yellow Tops because of my experience working with them. I was going to put a Red Top in my truck, but I decided to try this new Exide XCD (Extreme Cycle Duty) that is designed to function as both a starting battery and deep cycle. The shop that I bought it from said they have had good luck so far. We'll just have to wait and see what happens in 3 years, which is the typical life span of a yellow top.
I posted a pic of it in my photo gallery. You can direct link to it here.

I find it ironic that we can post pictures in the album, but can't display them in a message. Anyway, here's a picture of my new battery setup.

If you are using it as a main battery, Optima Deep Cycle batteries don't last very long. That's one reason why I bought the Exide. I've seen, and replaced, a number yellow tops through out my career and I know first hand their reliability. I know that everyone is going to chime in and say they've used them for years and have never had a problem. Even RA and I disagree about them. But keep in mind that I used to sell them so my experience is limited to a couple hundred of those batteries.316 wrote:Exide is a great battery, I thinking of one of those or a Optima Deep Cycle Battery.
The Optima Red Top is the battery you want to use as a main starting battery. The Exide I bought is designed to be a main battery with deep cycle performance.

That's what I want to do, I have two bays one for my normal batt. and I will use the deep cycle for a amp to hopefully reduce noise.Shaft wrote:If you are using it as a main battery, Optima Deep Cycle batteries don't last very long. Went to a local store and saw the yellow and red tops. Im beefing up my rig. 1x4 , I only have one battery. Which do you suggest? Im only going to run battery I should say. The guy at the store said the yellow was great for running big amps and such. You have the experience. Its going in a Chev Malibu 2000.
Allow me to post before everyone else comes in and says "YELLOW TOP, YELLOW TOP, YELLOW TOP". Get a red top. It is designed to be used as a starting battery. Only use a yellow top if you are going to keying up for long periods of time while the engine is off. Just remember, a Predator 10K isn't always the best antenna you can use. Neither is a yellow top Optima battery. Sometimes sometime cheaper will work better.muthatrucker530 wrote:Went to a local store and saw the yellow and red tops. And keep this is mind. The guy at the auto parts store sells spark plugs, tires, and motor oil. He's not an mobile electronics specialist. He only says whatever his battery rep <usually a truck driver that just delivers the batteries to the store> tells them. Of course he's going to want to sell you the more expensive battery, but he doesn't know what is going to work best for you.
OK, now everyone can chime in and say how much better a yellow top is.
man i have used red and yellow tops for many years still useing the some of the veary first ones that came out many many moons ago. and they work just fine ......................lmao j/k! i have killed many batt's in my time the worst one i think i have ever used was a orbit bat it did not like my amps ........lol but for the most part a batt will last if you take care of it a goon one any ways
i wouls like to see how the batt holds up!
smiley has some kick **Censored** batts he just started selling that rock put hold a nice size price tag too
