welding cable for power and ground wire?

i got a deal today on a 75ft roll of good welding lead. is it heavy enough to use for power or ground wire for my amps and mulit battery electrical system? with the price of gas im probly gonna sell my suburban and build up my s10 blazer and i wanna go ahead and run all heavy wire and go ahead and build my battery box in the back and my amp rack and get all the wires ran. will the welding cable be heavy enough? in all ive got about 125ft of it 1 roll of red and one black. if this will work let me know. if not tell me what i need.
now that brings me to my second question. what to build the battery box out of? steel? wood? im a better welder than carpenter..lol but i was thinking about building the box out of 1/4 in steel and lining the box with rubber sheet to insulate it. does that sound like a good idea or not? im probly gonna have to upgrade to a high out put alt or add a second alt but more on that latter....thanks for the advice guys...jas

In a nutshell, "Yes", welding cable will be just fine, almost overkill. As far as battery boxes, a lot of people use p/u truck tool boxes. Or just get some marine poly boxes and mountings.

welding leads cant be beat as far as pure amps it can handle and amount of juice it can move because of the many finely stranded wire. I run 2/0 (not 2 quage) welding wire myself.
